To hell with Irwin, says South ParkPaul Kent and Steve Gee
October 28, 2006 12:00am
FURY has erupted over a controversial episode of cartoon show South
Park that makes fun of Steve Irwin's death.
The episode, to be shown in the US next week, shows Irwin walking
around a fancy dress party in hell with a stingray barb sticking out of
his chest.
SBS is likely to broadcast the controversial episode in Australia.
A South Park spokesman defended the episode that shows callous
disrespect for the grieving Irwin family.
"We have offended people in the past and probably will again," the
spokesman said.
"We know that regular watchers will not be shocked."
But one regular US viewer who felt compelled to post an entry on the
official South park website said the creators had "sunk to new lows".
"Even my son, who defends your show to the bitter end, grew very quiet
and sad, and then commented that he couldn't believe (you) had done
that," marymac writes.
"Try to have at least a little bit of class, OK?
"I mean, come on! The poor guy just died. Most of us are still a little
upset about that.
"It's just not the same as Tom Cruise being a closet gay because
there's some funny subject matter. I felt almost embarrassed for you
guys."
A spokeswoman for SBS conceded some Australians might find the episode
offensive, but said the program was likely to go to air.
"The show is always pushing the boundaries," the spokeswoman said.
In the episode, Satan hosts a fancy dress party attended by Irwin,
Princess Diana, Adolf Hitler and other people among the famous dead.
But Irwin is kicked out by the Devil because he's not in costume.
The Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) said the
primary responsibility for ensuring that programs reflected community
standards rested with radio and TV stations.
SBS said the episode was unlikely to be shown in Australia until next
year because local programming was about 12 months behind the US.
Irwin family spokesman John Stainton was travelling overseas and
unavailable for comment.
It is not the first time South Park has lampooned the Croc Hunter.
In a 1999 episode, Mr Irwin was shown terrorising animals before being
hired by the Government to track down an ice man.
Mr Irwin's daughter Bindi, 8, disclosed yesterday that she would launch
her first DVD, Bindi Kidfitness, which features her famous dad.
Available from November 25, the DVD vows to "fight fat with fun".
It includes nine animal-inspired songs and routines by Bindi and her
all-singing, all-dancing sidekicks, The Crocmen.

In other worse, they complained before they actually saw the episode!
Why is the joke about Steve Irwin more offensive than an John Wayne
Gacy, Jeffery Dahmer and Ted Bundy hacking up bodies? Or priests with
their "pet" children on leads?
If the Steve Irwin joke is all the whingers have to complain about in
this episode they seriously need to examine their priorities and/or get
a life.

Agree with U....The creators of South Park have made a sh!tload ('scuse
the pun)
of dough (hundreds of millions in fact) out of offending people.
The Steve Irwin (controversy) is no more offensive that some of the
scatalogical "humor"
they have displayed in previous episodes of South Park.
Anyway, they are both multi-millionaires so could deal well financial
with any potential future lawsuits that may be filed against them.

Steve Irwin's Wife 'Devastated' By South Park Lampooning
She worries her kids will see it...
By: Chris Taylor on
Steve Irwin’s widow is said to be “devastated” after learning her
late husband has been lampooned by South Park.
Terri Irwin is said to be concerned her two young children will see the
episode, made just two years after his death from a stingray barb -
which Australian channel SBS say they will broadcast in the next two
years.
A friend of Terri is quoted as saying, “Terri is devastated Steve is
being mocked in such a cruel way. Her worry is that Bindi and Bob will
see it and break down.
"Steve had as big a sense of humour as anyone, but this goes too far
too soon."
Steve’s British naturalist pal Mark Amey has also slammed the
satirical American cartoon comedy, dubbing it “distasteful s***”.
He says, “My message to people is don't watch the show. It's
distasteful s**t. Let's hope none of Steve's fans who keep poisonous
animals happen to find the addresses of those behind the show and leave
them a nice surprise."
Perhaps not the wisest words considering Irwin fans supposedly tracked
down and maimed stingrays following the TV star’s tragic accident.

In related news, the media didn't find the appearance of Gandhi in said
episode offensive, or the little naked boys on leashes accompanying the

Seems to me that you are totally unaware that Bindi was a television
super-star LONG before Peter Brock and Steve Irwin died.
by definition, the second fiddle in an act is not a super-star, and i agree
with the previous poster, bindy and that septic mother of hers are milkin it
for all it is worth.
BUT
good luck to them, the guy was a grade 1 fuckwit he is not entitled to
anyones respect, dead or alive

Gandhi was a person who worked primarily for the benefit of others, irwin
worked primarily for the sake of his own pocket there is no comparison, yes
it is tasteless to lampoon either, but (and note i dont even like south
park) tasteless is what this show does, if people turn on and get offended
thats their own damned fault. The situation is practically identical to the
idiots who walk into a strip club and complain about seeing naked women.

Second fiddle? She had her own show you moron. Her father was second
fiddle in that show. It was Bindi's show that he was filming for when
he died in the shark attack.

did she pay the bills, no
is she the executive producer, no
does she personally own the copyright, no
so under what definition does she have her 'own' show, pray tell
she may appear on the show, (child labour, more evidence of steve and terry
being abusive and exploitative parents) but that doesnt make it *her* show,
next you'll be telling me that cartoon connection was anne marie's show, or
totally wild is stacy's show.
I must admit to being a little shocked TG, you are not usually sucked in by
marketing hype or popular misunderstandings of reality, yet marketing hype
is the only way it can be even remotely described as her show.
cheers
