View Full Version : It was working yesterday...
I live on the second floor of an old Federation style house on top of a hill in an inner Brisbane suburb with an antenna that's about six meters high. Until yesterday I recieved digital TV just fine, today however I recieve 3/4 signal strength but every three seconds the signal drops to nothing. As a result I have an unreliable signal and cannot recieve ANY channels on digital, I can however recieve all the channels on analoge. I believed the interference was caused by the construction they are building next door until it was pointed out that I am between the TV towers and the construction. Any suggestions? I imagine if a roof mounted TV antenna can't pick up the signal there would be no point in my buying a small indoor antenna. Can I do anything, or do I just have to live with no TV?

Have you turned on aircon or anything new?

Could be one of 2 things.
1 Set top box is failing. How old is it? Can you try it somewhere else to see if it is OK?
2 Antenna signal has changed.

Was your box turned on or connected to the antenna during Thursday's storm?
Was your antenna damaged or moved by the storm?

Hi have just rectified a similar problem in rgds a hi rise apartment, a
Tower Crane erection had caused enough of a Signal deflection to cause the
receiver to drop in and out, took a while to find the reason, I fixed it
SHORT TERM, by installing a HILLS PHASED ARRAY CA8 to assist in capturing
the deflected signal, and it helped,
just an idea,
the original antenna was a Yagi Uda type device, ( direct line of sight
etc,) the CA8 is for Hi Band VHF chs, and is designed for Out of phase and
mulitpathed and reflected signals

No new appliances
The Set Top Box is less than six months old, all the other components seem to be working fine, I can still pick up the radio and play the built in games ect, but I haven't tried it elsewhere yet.
The box was turned on during the storm and connected, but it does not seem to be the problem. I'm pretty sure it's a reception problem. As for the antenna being moved by the storm that's possible, but it wouldn't have moved much as it's secured by lines in three directions. At most it could have rotated. I'll have a look into the phased array antenna, at the moment it seems like my best chance.

Try resetting set top box to factory default and set up again.
It is possible the storm has scrambled the internals of the box, or it could also have damaged the tuner part only of the box.
Brand and model of box would be helpful.

Before spending your cash, you should at least check that the storm didn't
damage the coax at the masthead, or the Balun, where it connects to the
antenna itself. The wires can get a bit fragile over the years. Coax can
also get water into it if it is not properly sealed at routed at the
masthead, which can cause signal problems - again, if the cable is old, it
can be very corroded.
Try the box at a friends house just to be sure.
I had a Thomson box, which suffered the faulty power supply problem that
many have copped. When the switch mode plug pack went, the box became very
erratic and worked spasmodically for a while. Interestingly, it cause
massive RF interference to other devices until I realised what was going on.
Plenty of responders have asked for the make and model of your box. They
want to know because some are known to have defects or known errors. Let
them know the details.
