You are a man of few words. And I am a man of stating the bleeding obvious.
So what about the Jetta do you think is greatest?

Just talking to one of the reps who visits my business regularly, and
when they trade in the Falcodore repmobile, it's being replaced with
the turbo-diesel Jetta. He's driven it, and is thinking "why didn't we
do this before?" He's quite impressed. And the savings will rack up
fairly quickly, too, in his line of work (1000-2000km/week).
Cheers,

The Bora was an excellent car as well, however it was more expensive so it
didn't sell as well.
The Jetta is basically a $32,990 Civic and Corolla competitor, although VW
would have you believe that it takes on the Accord instead (and even then,
it's more expensive). It's just too expensive (and underpowered) for what
it is.
Why didn't VW fit the 2.5L 5-cylinder engine that they get in North America,
to the Jetta here? Then at least it could boast a larger engine than
Accord/Mazda/Camry. Over there, the Jetta sells for only US$16,490
(A$21,500), which is only a few grand more than its rivals (Civic sedan is
US$15,000) and *significantly* less than Accord and Camry (which are both
around US$20k).
So Jetta is 10% more expensive than Civic in the US. If that were the case
here, Jetta would sell for $23,700 AUD!
If VW Australia wanted to be serious about the Jetta and sell it in big
numbers, they should have priced it between 24-27k. At the moment they are
selling less than 400 Jettas a month compared to 4,000 Corollas. Their
loss.

Fracking hell it is built in Mexico. It is a Golf (SA made) with a
boot. And all the talk I have heard is that the Golf is better built.
You have low standards Oz.

Because the US 2.5L doesn't give any more useful power than the 2.0
TDI (or the 2.0FSI) and it uses as shirtload more fuel. Don't even
think about comparing it to the 2.0 TFSI.
Size isn't important; it's what you can do with it that's relevant.
We have clean fuels in Oz and the FSI and TDI can make good,
efficient use of them. The 2.5-litre engine is necessary because the
crappy fuels can't be used (sensibly) in the FSI engines. Also being
port-injected, the 2.5 are *much* cheaper to make than the
direct-injection engines for the rest of the world.
>engine than Accord/Mazda/Camry. Over there, the Jetta sells for

It only has to come from Mexico.
You also overlook a minor factor like taxes and duties. A fully
loaded Jetta 2.0 TDI with DSG can be bought for under AU$38k; and
the TFSI is still under $40k + on-road...

And the base-model Jetta in the US is way down on eqt specs compared
to the entry level in Oz.; which btw starts just shy of $33k.
The market demographics and the way that manufacturers try to
exploit them don't translate from one country to the next. If the
pov-pack 'rolla in the USA is cheap, it's because they can make them
cheaply for that market and stil lsell them; or at least, have them
on the price list to draw in the punters.

The only "trick" VW have to perform is to get the punters to take a
test drive.

All fair points. The 2.5L has the same power figure but alot more torque.
The situation is quite the same with Subaru's Liberty. Subaru Australia
offer both a 2.0L and a 2.5L, both with the same power figure but the 2.5L
has more torque. It's not necessarily all that much thirstier because the
smaller engine has to do more work. I don't have the exact figures but I
bet the 2.5L Liberty outsells the 2.0L by a huge margin. VW should have
done the same.

2.0 Jetta is 8.2L/100km, 200 Nm torque. 2.5L I5 has 228 Nm (14% more)
torque, and fuel economy is 10.7L/100km (city), and 7.8L/100km (highway). I
don't know how this compares to our 'combined cycle' figure?
This is from Wiki - "This new (2.5L) 20-valve DOHC engine is based on the
Lamborghini Gallardo's V10 with technology from the Bugatti Veyron, sharing
a similar head design and the same bore and stroke dimensions (82.5 x 92.8
mm)"

What does the FSI turbo have to do with anything? I am suggesting that they
should have fitted the 2.5L engine in place of the 2.0L (non-turbo) petrol
engine.
