Successful company wants to remain successful, there's a shock...

Depends what you're looking for. I see nothing in their lineup that I
would buy, but that's true for a lot of car companies.

> toyota is an evil company dont give them your money

Not sure that they're evil though. I don't recall them being busted
covering up critical safety defects, for example...

If being evil means you get a reliable car which the Taxi industry is
buying more and more of,..then it will have to be evil I quess.

Ask A Surf owner

Not actually "covering up" a safety defect, but turning it into a
profitable exercise for Toyota(Aus).

According to Toyota there is a design flaw in the drag link of a number
of Surf models.

Exactly the same part as fitted to a number of "Australian" IFS HiLux
vehicles in fact.

But Toyota (Aust) says it isn't responsible for supplying the parts for
any models other than those it imported.

Fair enough, if you want to hide behind the letter of the law. But, as
it is a world wide recall Toyota (jp) will supply free replacement
parts to any importer that asks from them.

The problem is that many of the companies that imported Surfs were
incorporated for the sole purpose of importing vehicles under the LVIS
as it existed at the time, and were (quite properly) wound up once they
had reached their import quota.

This means that the "importer" no longer exists to ask Toyota (jp) for
the necessary parts. Direct approaches to Toyota(jP) and Toyota(Aus) by
owners are rebuffed by directing the enquirer to contact the vehicle
importer.

Which means that the poor bloody owner must purchase the recall parts
from their local Toyota dealer, the price (according to the forums)
being from just under $200 to just over $500, depending on the degree
of ripoff being applied by that particular dealer (prices quoted
selected as they do not include fitting).

Whilst Toyota(Aus) has been unhelpful to Surf owners, they have fallen
over themselves to contact the various State authorities to inform them
of the fact of the recall. Those State authorities have then written
(at public expense) to the owners of every affected Surf and required
them to have the recall parts fitted.

Nicely profitable for Toyota(Aus) that.

And in case any Surf owner, unaware of the recall, is reading this. The
various forums are full of the means to identify the affected vehicles.
They will also tell you which dealers are selling the parts at a
reasonable price.

If you cannot do the job yourself, it is still worthwhile to buy the
parts and then give them to your local mechanic - he will probably
charge less for twenty minutes work that any Toyota dealer will.

Only a bitter and twisted mitsu fan would believe in this conspiracy
theory just because your favourite car brand is failing.

So now you have a grudge against Holden and Toyota for being successful.

A sad lonely life you have.

Really?

""Toyota's going to be No. 1. And whether they do it under the radar
or by announcing it, it's going to happen," said Maryann Keller, a
longtime automotive consultant and analyst.

Toyota already has overtaken Ford Motor Co. to become the world's
second-largest automaker. By 2006, it is shooting to sell 8.5 million
cars and trucks worldwide, edging close to GM, ranked No. 1 since
1931. If Toyota surpasses GM, that would have a profound psychological
impact on the U.S. industry, one of the last manufacturing sectors
where Americans still lead. It would also undermine GM's ability to
dominate the industry and buffet smaller players such as
DaimlerChrysler AG's Chrysler Group with its price wars. "

Thats a very amusing quote, "one of the last manufacturing sectors
where Americans still lead"
Americans having "lead" car manufacturing for a very very long time.

Its no secret Toyota are aiming to be no one but calling them evil is
childish, the US car makers make shit and deserve to go down the toilet
for all the rubbish they have made over a very long period.

When you look at various models over the years, their vehicles
prolly paid for themselves if owned over a long period of time
to various owners, which of course was part of the plot.

I'll agree they are getting a bit too big for their boots, however
it appears you get that these days.

Its amusing because they already lost it about 20 yrs ago and the author
of that quote is stupid enough to think that isn't the case.

Seems that they are heading that way which may or may not be a good
thing, if they continue to build quality products at a reasonable price
it will be good, if once they dominate they then jack up all their
prices and cheapen their products then it will be bad.
The only serious competition they have at the moment is GM, if Ford can
pull themselves out of their financial mess they may also be a decent
competitor again.
