I just notice this morning that the Sci-Fi Channel, (132 for Austar
satellite), is up.
Its only showing previews at the moment.

Will it be a standard channel?

Nope. It's part of the Fun package with Austar which is probably the least
attractive package out of all the 3. It's kinda cheeky to suck half the
content from TV 1 and then expect people to pay for another channel to get
it again.

Is TV1 going to not show any scifi? I have seen nothing to suggest that.
Maybe tv1 will continue as is and scifi will also start. Then if you don't
subscribe to scifi, you aren't any worse off.
I haven't seen anything to confirm what will be on tv1 after 1/12. Have
you?

I'm told scifi programs will be shifted from TV1 to the SciFi channel,
thus freeing up TV1 to show other non scifi material. Star Trek will
disappear from TV1 after 1 December and appear at the same time period
on the SciFi channel.
On other forums there is quite some negativity towards this i.e.
losing programs you are currently paying for, and having to subscribe
to an additional package which contains no other channels of interest.
Also heard that the Sci Fi channel won't be widescreen i.e. it will be
no different from TV1 in that respect. WS source material will either
be cropped or perhaps letterboxed like the History channel and
National Geographic do.
Austar & Foxtel are copping feedback re all this - if you feel the
same way drop them an email also.

They're advertising that _House_ is starting "soon".
I'd be pretty surprised if they still ran hours of Trek every day.
Maybe they will, but it does seem unlikely.

Why do they letterbox Discovery channel- why not just leave it widescreen

The Sci-fi channel is owned by the same people who own TV1 (Sony,
Paramont, Universal) so all of the TV1 content that is Sci-fi will be
moved to the Sci-fi channel. Other channels sci-fi shows might stay
where they are.

Nothing Sci-fi

Same reason most of the other channels also do it. Cant be bothered making
the change. They either don't think there is demand or cant be arsed with
the expense(whatever that would be). Its a shame how little is widescreen on
Oz Pay tv thus far. So much of the content is and ends up 4:3
letterboxed(ala Nat Geo channel, etc) and it just looks awful. Same with the
music channels. I just don't get it.

But they used to be full screen, and they have gone "back" to letterboxing!
Sky News, Channel V and others too!
I've rung up Austar and complained and they say they don't know why the
channels are doing it.
The more people ring the better, they have monthly meetings with channel
reps and pass on feedback from viewers.

Good- I rang Austar to record a complaint. She also suggested I email a
complaint to aunz@discovery.com
I will let you know if I get any sensible explanation.

speaking of letterboxing, why the hell did they do it to Stargate SG1 season 8?

The new channel is in contract with the scifi channel from the US. I can surely say that we will, over time, see much more than just old TV1 scifis. Check out the scifi channel US web site. Unfortunatly we will see a big delay with most new content thanks to the expense of contracted shows as well as commercial channel contracts. I hope that creating the scifi channel will speed things up as the funds gained from this channel should flow back in to this channel making newer shows happen sooner on OZ TV as these shows will no longer have to compete with other TV1 genre. I also hope that the contract that TV1 signed with SCIFI USA will include some newer stuff.
Time will tell!!!! I plan to enjoy what so many of us have waited so long to see, an OZ scifi channel!!!!!!!

Hopefully people will vote with their wallets by not signing up for the

I looked at the programs, and I really liked them. To the extent that I

If the Sci-Fi channel was showing new shows, or running concurrently with
the US Sci Fi Channel, I would sign up, but not otherwise.
