I don't know if this happens in the capitals but here in Wide Bay (Qld) when
7HD cross to commercials (indeed even their SD programming) the ads are in
SD yet when 9HD (WIN) or 10HD (Southern Cross) switch to their commercial
breaks (or non HD programming), after their Network's teasers, they switch
to their respective HD loops. Does anyone in the television transmission
industry know how this works considering the STB is still set to HD. I
produce programmes in HD 1080i and it's impossible to mix HD and SD in HD
final format. Also it takes the Avid, 6hrs per 1hr of HD rendering from a HD
source to a Digital Cut.
I doubt if anyone will give me the correct answer but it's worth a try I
guess.

I assume 7 are using a real-time SD->HD upscaler whereas 9 & 10 probably
can't be bothered shelling out the cash on the gear until advertisers start
complaining about it. Upscaling isn't a particularly difficult thing to do
real-time, particularly in dedicated hardware.

You have to be joking. 7 use a HD format that is a joke, 576p in my opinion
is a real Clayton's HD. For all you newbies, that's the HD you have when you
aren't having HD. At least 9 and 10 use 1080i which is far far superior and
it shows.

I thought that also but (on 7) when the HD programme resumes there is a
definite visible switch like a flicker and the audio changes as well. There
is no flicker when 9 & 10 resume the programme from their loops.

The Ch7 regional affiliate feed (a 10Mbps feed from Docklands in
Melbourne) is switched on and off by the relevant regional station to
seed in their ads. This is why you get the noticeable switching.
The regionals for Ch9 & 10 (WIN & SC10) don't seed an upconverted SD
version of their ads because they just don't have (and most likely can't
afford) the equipment to insert their upconverted SD ads so they just
play back the fulltime HD feed from the metro stations that has the demo
loop playing in the ad break. (It was a choice of a black screen / test
screen or the demo loop).

I didn't realise 7 were 576p - I thought only SBS were going that way (I
don't bother watching HD as my TV is SD).

What Kubalister said makes sense - I just had a look at Prime HD and saw
what you mean- what I saw was more of a stutter. I can't see why it should
be there - if they're working with MPEG streams I assume they can cut in
with an i-frame and with the same GOP structure, and cut back the same way.

Actually, it's a wonder they don't do that now you have mentioned it.
Certainly not going to cost them extra to do it as it would/should be all in
place, perhaps they never thought of it. Thanks for that guys.

The box to do that is called a "SPLICER"
Cost is about $30,000
Still wonder why they don't bother?
