Just looking at Helen Coonan's website & other digital TV websites,
looks like we get more FTA TV channels
in 2007, though just what they will be iz anybody's guess !
The existing three commerical networks will be able to multi-channel
with HD tv channels in 2007 -- but will not be able
to multi-channel extra tv channels will addition programing on SD tv
channels until the year 2009.
So the question remains what sort of extra TV channels will we get next
year in addition to the HD channels ?!?!?
Will the ABC & SBS commence new services on additional digital channels
next year ?!??!
I won't be switching to digital until at least 2009 when there are more
commercial tv channels and more commercial programing
available.
ABC programing iz very elitist & British orientated -- not my
proverbial cup of tea !

Why not? Despite the lack of additional content and channels, the better
quality picture, sound and wide screen image is good enough incentive at
this stage still considering an SD box can be picked up for well under
$100 these days.

We won't get any channels in addition to the HD channels: the HD channels
will no longer be required to be a simulcast of what's on the networks'
respective SD/analogue channels. e.g. we'll still have Seven/Seven HD,
except from Jan 1 they *might* not always have identical programming.
Whether any of the networks choose to take advantage and develop their HD
channel into a fully independently-programmed channel remains to be seen,
but Seven is probably most likely to if anyone does. Only ABC and SBS are
allowed to offer "extra" channels - and they don't have the bandwidth.

The genre restrictions will be dropped, which that ABC2 and SBS World News
will probably get revamped with a much larger range offered in the case of
ABC2, as for SBS it's anybody's guess - either they will finally offer
English language news programmes on SBS World News, or maybe they will offer
a whole new channel instead.

Why not? STBs start at only $60.

Elitist? You obviously haven't watched ABC for a while.

It aint like the old days of elitism like "mind your language",
"are you being served", etc :-)
On the other hand, I haven't seen any "welfare bludgers" or dodgy
tradesmen on Four Corners lately. Is that what the OP wants?
