i had the exact same thing happen to me on the dvx222d, i got it replaced and it has been working flawlessly with no pauses ever since.
:dD I'm smiling because I got a replacement unit (XMS855D) today from Strathfield Sunshine. The bloke even apologised for the trouble... ya gotta luv'em
This one works beautifully and I've even managed to upgrade the firmware successfully.. not bad for a dinosaur computer systems support analyst/programmer (with a 1978 RMIT degree :o ).
Thanks all.
btw if you have the pause problem I suspect this is a symptom of a similarly faulty unit which is likely to die, as my did, sooner or later.. so it might be worth returning it sooner.

*snip* ya gotta luv'em
*snip*
no you dont :|
they were nothing but rude when i returned mine, took them long enough to serve me, they seemed to be engaged in some wonderfully important conversation. . .last night's tv's important right?
And when i was finally served they tried to rush me out faster then, well umm something fast :p
but glad you got yours fixed :) and managed to do so with a polite store.

Hi everyone and thanks for all your contributions to this thread (esp. andrw) I thought I'd share my experiences with this player in case anyone is still interested. Although these players are potentially quite good value, I've found that the loader seems very 'temperamental' for lack of a better word. I've had to return 2 dvxs, due to disk loading problems, however the 3rd is much improved.
I've had (practically) no problems with the actual playing of divx/xvid/mpg files -the mediatek chip has been doing everything well but I can't say the same for the loader. My first dvx would come up with 'no disk' or 'unknown disk' quite often. My second one had major trouble playing files that were damaged (scratched disks) and wasn't able to load certain media at all (eg. hyundai 4x dvd+rs) whether they were dvd-video or data discs (avi). I took a selection of discs to the store (in brisbane) and asked to try them out in a new unit. The new player loaded them all up no problem. However I have since noticed that it sometimes has problems loading sony dvd-r (inkjet printables: SONY16D1) and TDK dvd-r (inkjet printables & silver coated: TTH02). It does however play TDK dvd+r (4x RICOHJPN) no problem and SONY dvd-rs (non-inkjet printable: SONY16D1) - which may indicate it has something to do with the disk surface. It may just be a complete coincidence but all the heavier/thicker discs I've tried seem to be the only ones with problems with my current unit -this has also been universal on all 3 players I've tried. I'm interested to see if I've just had bad luck or if they're all like this. Not to worry though, as I usually don't use those disks. I have also had no problems with other cheap brands in my current player (sky, ritek, alphatec, phillips & the hyundais (fake TY - YUDEN000) which all load up within a few seconds.
So, richcc I've had the same problem playing (certain) TDKs as you, sometimes they load normally, other times they take a minute or 2. I'm getting really tired of hearing that loud 'clunk, clunk, clunk, whir' noise! (what exactly is that 'clunking' noise by the way?) Apart from those few problems I'm very happy with the player & am grateful for the firmware as the menu is now much better. If anyone wants to share the brand/type/media id of disks they have had success with (for this player) that would be great (preferably not expensive disks). Lastly, a question- I've been burning 16x media at 8x for data disks (14-25 xvid/divx files per disk) would the difference in player 'compatibility'/loading time be significant if I lowered the burning speed to 2x or 4x? Thanks in advance. :)

I'm also wondering if i should try different media? Most of my discs are TDK dvd-r and a few +r's. Burnt in nero as data with UDF , ISO or both.
I also tried some TDK DL +R but the player wont read them at all.
I posted about the drive not reading certain discs and just doing a whistling sound...
Further to this, I have found that anything I burnt to RW reads fine but a R I made took a couple of "reseating" attempts to load.
To my perception, the RW's are a tad heavier?
Paul.

I tried burning some of the (inkjet printable) TDK disks with my friend's burner today & they all loaded up & played perfectly in the dvx... same speed burns (8x) & same program (nero), & the disk quality after burning was pretty much the same (93-98%)... Must just be some problem with my burner & those disks.

initially I had a problem with the remotes being extremely unresponsive, but the units working ok in other regards. I ended up taking one upstairs to the master bedroom. I found it works flawlessly there, so it looks like it's my plasma screen somehow interfering with the remote transmission/reception.
This is a known issue with Soniq branded Plasma screens (not sure which Plasma you have or if it suffers similar issues) this has been well reported over on the DBA forums, the Soniq Plasmas won't work with Foxtel at all, they have a radiation issue and aren't compliant with Australian standards from what I was told, the excessive radiation they pump out wipes out the remotes.

There is no random play option (that I can find) for mp3 playback.
You can view all the files on the disc etc, but no random play.
Hi andw
Can you view the files in list mode like you can on the Omni DX4200?
and do you think you may be able to work your firmware wizardry, at some stage, with a mod to endow these players with random play.
Great work you've done before with firmware, my Omni's have long file name support and display off as default thanks to you.
Cheers

Yes, you can bring up a full list, from memory it is the "prog" button.
Not something I use myself, so I'm only going from memory.
The random play needs 2 things, a button on the remote, and the code in the player.
If the code is in the player, it might be possible to remap one of the remote keys.
I'll have to have a look sometime.

I just bought a DVX222D from Strathfield today ($58) and it doesn't play or recognise any of my DivX DVD's.
I also updated the firmware (incase something had been fixed) but the discs would not be recognised (player stuck at loading screen).
The instruction booklet makes no mention of the player being able to play DivX, but the box and the guy at the store (and people here) say it can do so.
It plays regular DVD's fine. Have I got a faulty unit? Should I try the XMS player??
EDIT- Most of my DivX files are in folders on the DVD's (DVD-R's, Verbatim and TDK, I tried both), but even the folders would not be displayed at the menu (as they are in LG and Legend DVD players)
It should definitley be showing the folders.
How are the discs mastered?
Are they ISO9660 format?
Perhaps your one has a faulty loader tray.
What are the file extensions on the files?

Hi folks,
This is my second XMS 855 and although I love the machine. It once again is not reading discs.
I just phoned Gosford strathfield to see if they had any models in stock, which of course they don't.
They then explained that there is no way they do replacements, that it would have to be sent back to XMS for assesment, then perhaps they would replace it. Otherwise I should buy a new machine.
I explained it has a known problem with the loader and he told me that was crap.
He said they never just exchange the machines, always send them back, yet last time it was exchanged no worries.
Every disc (including bought dvd's) I put into the player just wont read, yet I tried the update cd and it reads that no problems.
Is there a setting that I could have wrong in the machine or is this a machine fault.
It was all working fine until I put a ISO disk in which it had played perfectly the day before, started playing then froze, and wont read any disc after.
Could some-one offer advice, first regarding Strathfield and getting a replacement rather than getting it sent away and second, what settings I may look at to fix the problem. Also is there anywhere that I could show the guys at Strathfield Gosford that it is a known problem. What can I print out.
Your help will be appreciated.

What are the file extensions on the files?
The discs were burnt in UDF format, and all file extensions are .avi
I took the player back and paid $10 more for the XMS.
So far so good, plays my discs fine, so the DVX unit must have been faulty
For the XMS, at first I thought it looked like it had had a previous owner when I got it (scratched face, power button depressed, warranty sticker almost broken), but realised there was a protective film over it (call me pedantic).
But I'm quite happy with the unit, looks nice, plays the AVI files well (only the slightest of lag on occasion). I will have to try the firmware upgrade (does that let you see the full file names in the list?? At the moment it cuts a lot off)
Thanks

For the record, the "Menu" button brings up a list of all files on the disc (not 'prog').
Also had a quick look at the remote codes, replaced the code for 'Stop' (picked this as it's easy for me to find in the code) with the remote code for 'random' from other remotes.
Unfortunatley that just resulted in 'Stop' doing nothing.
So....
Either there is no 'random play' code in the firmware, or it just doesn't like the remote code I fed it.

My son was watching a burnt DVD-R (not DivX) on the DVX222D when it froze about 25 minutes in. He has watched this movie before with no problems. After ejecting the disk the player now refuses to load any type of disk even commercial DVD's. Any advice or should I just take it back to Strathfield?

Is it ok after it has "cooled down"?
(not a solution, just curious).
If it won't read any discs, I would suggest taking it back.

The Omni lists all the files with the 'prog' button, and has 'random' & 'shuffle' as two of the modes that can be selected using the 'repeat' button.
No random modes lurking behind a 'repeat' button on the Strathfield players I suppose ?
Thanks for trying andw

From memory it only gives you the options to repeat the current file or the entire folder, no random.
