can anyone help or suggest a newsgroup more appropriate to ask about
this please?
i have a hitachi 42" plasma, and a pioneer dv-344 dvd player connected
by s-video.

we've watched many dvds over the last few weeks, and everything's been
working fine. i don't know how, when or if anything's been changed, but
dvds won't play now, they show b&w and shaky picture.

when using tv/video button on the tv's remote to search for the dvd
player, we notice that the connection now says ntsc for all connections
that it finds, i expect it said pal before but i don't know. so if i hit
the tv/video button, first i get tv ntsc, then composite video ntsc,
then s-video ntsc, then component 576i, at which point regular foxtel
shows and is fine.

i've found the instructions for changing the dvd player between auto /
ntsc / pal, and i've tried it on each of those settings, makes no
difference. i've found how to access the menu on the hitachi tv to
change between auto / ntsc / pal, and have tried each setting, with no
progress. the tv still shows "ntsc" with each connection and dvds still
only work as described above!

i'm assuming that all the connections should show as pal, is this a
reasonable assumption? i don't know if this problem lies with the tv or
the dvd player.

i'd really appreciate any help on this if anyone has any ideas!

All I can suggest is :-

Unplug everything from the mains.

Remove all leads and connections - electrical and otherwise.

Leave for a few hours (or at least half an hour).

Plug everything back together.

Switch on and try again.

I'd suggest the problem is with the DVD player but I'm only guessing.
It could even be cable related - something might be loose.

(dunno)

Not necessary to unplug all the cables.

Turn power off for 1 minute to all devices and then back on.

Do a "system reset" from the "system menu" and set up the panel again. The system required for Australia is PAL B/G or Auto.

See how that goes.

This information is of a generic nature as when the model numbers are not posted I could be p*ssing in the wind with any advice given.
