For those that don't know, it's a 1989 LN106 diesel 4WD Hilux (prolly
should have mentioned that a few threads ago).

First of all, does the starter use gear drives?

Because when cold, sometimes when I go to kick it over it sounds like
the teeth of two gear cogs grinding together rather than meshing.

*krkrkrkrkrk* <lets go of key> wiiIIZZZZZzzzzzzz...

Do the teeth just wear with age? And can I safely assume the problem
goes no further than the starter motor?

I should add that this did happen once or twice before the rebuild, but
seems to be quickly getting worse.

Any ideas welcome.

New tight donk. What would you expect a suspect starter to do?
Wasn't it checked?

Hmmmm....no. I hope your ring gear is OK, which is not a fun fix if
worn/missing.

Seek repairer's assistance is my only idea at this point, sorry.

Best of luck.

Cheers,

Andy. (the other Andy.)

Hilux diesels have reduction gears before the pinion.

Most likely the reduction gears are buggered but if it happens to be
the pinion you risk damaging the ring gear on the flywheel.

Start by ringing Repco, or similar, for the price on a new
(aftermarket) starter motor... which is likely to be the cheapest
repair option for any 400,000km unit (if one's available for your
model). See an auto electrician if you want a second opinion.

Anything wears out, however ....

Feck, gunna need to send you section "ST"
of the manuel again, too.

Pinion gear tooth broken or faulty starter,
Flywheel teeth broke .....

Find your fecking engine manuel :-)

As long as the starter is the suspect, I'm fine with that.

> Wasn't it checked?

Nope. Nothing about starter (or alternator for that matter) on the
bill... <goes off and writes new "to do" list>

Thanks. I'll be onto this ASAP.

Yeah this was going to be my first step. It's probably a tired old unit
because I strongly suspect it's previous owner (who did the first
200,000) used it just as a farm tool. So lots of cold starts and short
runs and not too good on the oil changes just by the way (to quote the
engine builder on the contents of the sump "a bucket of vegemite").

Are you offering to inspect his ring gear ?

Swap the battery and see what happens
if not then pull the starter and have it inspected , a replacment
foulcan unit is about $125.00 so I expect your ro be prohibitive as I
suspect the gear drive is buggered .

Erm, it's becoming a big priority :-)

Battery is fairly new though.

Definitely.

At least it won't be a big cost, given that as a yard stick.

I can't fix this vehicle fast enough. Seems I'm hitting a definite
expiry date (no thanks to first owner).

I don't like to think what 're-sleeving the bore' involves.
