Interesting they are doing away with the 13, 14, 15 placeholders...
what about when SD multi-channelling is allowed?
from:
http://www.dba.org.au/index.asp?sectionID=58&newsID=902&display=news
Network Ten has advised Digital Broadcasting Australia that it will be
upgrading its digital television services during December 2006 to
provide a better quality service in preparation for sports broadcasts
in high definition in 2007. The change will be progressively rolled
out, commencing with Sydney and Brisbane in the early hours of Tuesday
5th December. Melbourne, Adelaide and Perth will be upgraded either one
or two weeks later.
Viewers will notice that digital services 13, 14 and 15 will be dropped
from the logical channel lineup. These were "placeholders" generated
when Ten trialed multi-view services.
Ten's high definition service (Digital Service 12) will have even
better resolution - going from a picture format of 1440 x 1080 pixels
to 1920 x 1080 pixels.
At the same time, Ten is bringing online a new system to transmit
program information (the "now" and "next" guides).
There will be some other minor technical changes in the digital stream
that are not visible to viewers.
While the majority of newer model digital television receivers will
automatically adjust to these changes, if viewers experience any
problems receiving Ten's digital television services after Ten's change
it is recommended they firstly re-scan their receiver.

I suspect that they mean that their crusty existing system which
regularly screws up and stops giving out correct details will be
replaced with a new system that can provide multi-day info so they can
do away with the pointless guide channel and free up more bandwidth for
the HD channel.

Their CURRENT system can provide multi-day guide info. The fact that it's
never been provided is a deliberate decision by Ten, not a software
limitation.

I see 1088 lines, not 1080, on both 9 and 10, presumably it is rounding
up to a multiple of 16.
Is there some problem with my software, and it should know to ignore the
extra 8 blank lines?
Also 10 does only 704x576 SD, instead of 720 across. Why???

Yes, but the current system crashes in a heap every once in a while and
needs to be reset.

How f***ing difficult is it to write a bit of software that displays what's
going to be on next?
(Not having a go at you, just wondering where Ten sources their software from).

I'd hazard a guess that it most likely isn't the fault of the software
but perhaps the operating system. If it was Windows OS then it would
explain a few things. Although if the software had a memory leak it
would eventually suck up all the system resources until it couldn't
continue.

well I'm no software writer, but you might like to have a go, apparently its
pretty easy :-)

704x576 is a valid SD resolution, and is also used on some DVDs.

Yes, and I'll take 10's 7Mbps standard SD data rate (as opposed to others' usual 6Mbps) over an extra 16 horizontal pixels (2%) any day, particularly for motorsport.

When are they going to start broadcasting in 5.1 then? When they do I'll go
HD, but until then i don't think its worth it just for higher pic quality.

Well yes, but their MPEG-2 encoder is the worst of any of the FTA networks.
Whatever they're doing, they're adding so much edge enhancement it makes
their 7Mbps picture look worse than ABC2's 4.5Mbps picture much of the
time.
