Hi

I have recently bought a Toshiba SD-1300 player.

Reading that the machine would convert NTSC to PAL
i went out and bought Nightmare before Christmas SE
on Region 1.

I had no problems playing the disc whatsoever.

I have just bought the straight story and monkeybone R1.

NO such success.

The discs would not load up and i got a disc error.

What is the deal with this machine, why does it convert some region 1 discs and not others??
Is there any way around this that anyone knows of??
I know i can probably get the machine modified but i am reluctant incase it voids my warranty. Any information/advice on this would be appreciated also from others who have successfully modified their Toshiba 1300 machines. is the process reversable??

thanks in advance.

Toshiba being one of the inventor for the DVD standard, their machines seem have more restrictions or hard to modify when comes to region protection.

Is it possible the DVDs that do not play have Enhanced Region Control?(the wording must be wrong here:)).

My moded Toshiba box (the model is something like 320?) will not play these R1 discs (started from Patriot etc.) unless I do the trick of some key press combination.

Do I know what I am talked about here? I am not sure.:D

hi

thanks for the speedy reply!

to my knowledge the discs that i bought do not
have RCE. i checked on amazon.com as they normally
give a warning of RCE.

it is just very strange as i can play region 2 discs also.

what is this key combination?? is that just for RCE?
i have read about that somewhere possibly on
michaeldvd............

at the moment im looking for some places who will
modify..my little protest for this crap region system
that we have to put up with. there are so many old titles
on R1 that i want to buy, will never make it to region 4!

For my Toshiba model. When I see the beautiful map showing on the screen. I press STOP, then MEMORY, enter Chapter 1 followed by the PLAY button. Usually does the trick. I followed a post in the old forum regarding my model. I believe this is only for the RCE. This trick only allows to play the main movie part, accessing the add-on features were not mentioned. Perhaps it can be achieved by entering other Chapter numbers. I am not sure.

Despite the extra buttons needed to be pressed. I still like this player. It is much better than my old Panasonic 330 (?or 130?) model which its laser unit died after few months's usage, the replacement laser unit also died a couple of months after that.:) With those two laser units, the box had not even lasted the total of 12 month before I replaced it.:)

My Toshiba unit with only one laser head, do a brilliant job for playing disc which has slightly bad tracks, where other players may not play or play it with loud cracking noise from the speakers.

You could have started a new thread, not a lot of validity in dragging up a thread that is more than 3 years old which is about something different anyway. I'll overlook that though as you are obviously new here and a lot of new users make the same mistake. To answer your question, you don't specify which type of recordable media you are having trouble with DVD + or - R or RW but it is likely that your player may have limited capability to play recordable media as most likely (given the age of this thread and the assumption that you posted here because you have the same model player) you have a player that was available before there was any real need to play recordable media. You will need to give a bit more info about what media types you have tried and also what program the disc was made with for burning and authoring, it may be something as simple as an authoring error but unlikely, most likely is that your player just doesn't like recordable media due to its age. Normally -R media offers the most compatibility, however on some players +R can be used if you have a burner that supports bit setting and you can fool the player into thinking that the disc format is different.

If all this is too much and the player won't play them anyway spend $60 and buy a second player that supports recorded media, all the cheapies do these days.
