Hey guys.

I've had enough with watching DivX and XVID files infront of the computer.
Can anyone recommend me a good and cheap DVD player.

The only issues are that it MUST support:
DivX
XVID
Subtitles (SRT, IDX and SUB files)
and USB flash drive support would be nice as well.

I would like it to be relatively cheap. Nothing fancy is needed as i'd probably upgrade it to a DVD-Recorder or Blu-ray, HD-DVD in the future.

I've seen a few threads in here. But they didn't require subtitle support so i thought i'd make my own thread. Subtitle support is because sometimes i watch asian movies.

Cheers

Hey...so do all XMS dvd players support SUB files. I know a majority of DivX players support srt but SUB support seems harder to find.

Also is there a list of the major chipset manufacturers?
I did a search of the Phorum with the keyword chipset but nothing came up.

Cheers

XMS players are brought into the country badged out of factories in China, like a lot of brands these days, so comparing one model to another is not of much use, each has to be taken on it's own merits.

There are a few chipset manufacturers....
In the high end/cost players, there is Sigma - high definition, good playback generally - e.g. Zensonic Z500
In the lower end, the best of the best with the best file support etc seems to be Mediatek, then you have Zoran, ESS, not sure about others at this time of night, somewhere near the bottom is Sunplus (in my opinion) - Sunplus are usually the very cheap players you see around.
The good thing with the XMS-855 and DVX222D is that they are the first Mediatek based players that we have seen close to the Sunplus price range but with Mediatek chipset.

(p.s. jok11n could probably rattle off the chipset manufacturers a lot better than me)

Awesome. Thanks for the help and pointers.

Shall go searching at strathfield tommorow. These players were just brought out this month, so stock should be good eh?

I was in Strathfield Cannington WA today (buying discs) and they had stacks of them. (yes, literally stacks).

p.s. OT but if you are in there, check out the AkiMoto DVD+R (8x) discs, I have been using them for about 150-200 discs now and they have been great.
Just bought a 100 disc stack for $32.95 best cheap discs I've ever used.
(I only burn them at 4x)

Awesome..."stacks"...i like the word....however i am in the Sydney store so hopefully they have "stacks as well"...

But anyway.....hmmm AkiMoto.....i don't trust brands like that...Only i trust are Verbatim, TDK and Taio Yuden....but thanks for the suggestion...they sure are cheap!

Just bought one of the DVX222D's and i must truely say....this is like my most worthwhile buy of the century since i know i'll use it everyday for the rest of the players life now.

And strathfield does literally have "stacks" of them. They really do...theres like 20-30 in each store. Anyway...i'm probably going to go back and buy another one, a XMS one this time so its slightly different and can be used as a backup. But truely an awesome awesome player. I don't think any name brand ones could match it. It is truely AWESOME!!!!

Now i can watch infront of the TV rather than on the computer which i've been doing for the past year.

And i bought mine from the concord strathfield. They have it heaps cheap too. I got mine for only $58 dollars rather than the advertised $68. And the XMS is also $68 rather than $79 or whatever its actually meant to be.

Truely my best purchase of 2006!!!! :dD

It must be my face. $68 for 2 year warranty. I'll fight for that extra 10 bucks! :D I never worked in retail so I can't understand how two people from the same organisation can look up the same computer system and come up with two different prices. Looks like a nice unit for the dollars though.
