Every time I shut down my computer, I get a message..NSC Service "End
Program-Not responding". I have to click OK and wait! until finally my
computer shuts down. This just started and I have NO idea why this message
always flips up upon shut down.

Any suggestions?

NSCSRVCE.EXE is Norton Protection Center Service (NSCService). Related to
Norton Internet Security 2006 and Norton AntiVirus 2006.

NSCSRVCE.EXE is the program.

nscsrvce.exe is a process belonging to Norton Internet Security Suite which
protects your computer against Internet-bound threats such as spyware and
trojans which can be distributed through e-mail or attack directly to the
computer allowing unauthorized access to your computer.

If NSCSRVCE.EXE is running as a service, you may or may not see it in the
Task Manager, under the Processes tab, listed as NSCSRVCE.EXE or NSCSRVCE.
Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open the Task Manager.

Norton Protection Center Service (NSCService) or NSCSRVCE.EXE is a service,
it should be listed in Services.msc.

If you want disable NSCSRVCE.EXE, Open Services....
Start | Run | Type: services.msc | Click OK |
Scroll down to and double click Norton Protection Center Service |
Set the Startup type to Disabled | Click Apply | Click the Stop button |
Click OK | Close Services

Wes...I tried to change it to manual and automatic instead of disabling it,
and I got Error 1053: The service did not respond to the start or control
request in a timely fashion. What does that mean?

It sounds like I should keep it working, but the problem might be that this
NSC service is not right. It does not show up in the taskbar. Linda

Linda,

There is a set time limit to perform some actions and the service did not
respond within that time period. So you automatically got the message.

If you Disabled set the service, you may have to reboot in order to actually
stop the service.

Setting it to Manual may or may not do anything.

I hate Norton.

Set it back to Automatic and then ...
Try this...
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm

Read the instructions at the top.
76. Right hand side
Auto End Tasks to Enable a Proper Shutdown

shutdown.reg is the file you want.

Reboot after you have merged the shutdown.reg file.

shutdown.reg does the following:

* Sets ClearPageFileAtShutdown to 0.
If ClearPageFileAtShutdown is set to 1, shutdown takes a *long* time.

* Sets AutoEndTasks to 1.
Processes end automatically. The system does *NOT* wait until the process
ends, and, the process will *NOT* take more time than the value of the
HungAppTimeout entry, the End Task dialog box does *NOT* appear, stating
that the application cannot respond to the End Task request.

* Sets WaitToKillServiceTimeout to 1000 (1 second).
Determines how long the system waits for services to stop after notifying
the service that the system is shutting down. The Default value is 20000
(20 seconds).

And see if that helps to get rid of the End Program - Not responding error
for NSCSRVCE.
