I live in direct sight of the ABC tower and receive really good HD
transmisions from ABC HD. However, when the ABC news comes on at 7 pm I
receive the ABC logo and nothing else. I then have to switch to ABC SD to
receive the news. After about 5 minutes I can switch back to ABC HD and
evertthing is OK. I rescanned to sort out the new Channel 10 changes and
now instead of just getting the ABC logo it switches over to DIG radio when
the news starts up. Same deal, after 5 minutes can switch back to ABC HD and
all is OK. More of a nuisance than anything else. Any ideas of what can be
causing it?
Signal too strong when ABC news starts up????

Cheers

I don't think ABC transmits it's 7pm news on the HD mux - I got the same
thing waiting for Doctor Who when it was on. Promptly at 7 pm the good
doctor arrived on the screen

Yeah it's something to do with the HD channel only having a single playout
nationally, so if they did broadcast the news on HD, the whole country would
get Sydney's news on HD

I would send a complaint to the Treasurer for under funding the ABC - the
cost of implementing HD news bulletin in each State and Territory would mean
something else would have to go to pay for it. The political pressure from
the Senate on the ABC for a local news services rather than a national and
overseas perspective only, like SBS, is immense hence the need to in effect
to have 6 separate ABC's, costs a hell of a lot of money instead of simply
networking the same program everywhere from Sydney or Melbourne.

Pity they don't legislate for local sports reports. We all have to put up
with that useless waste of space, Peter bloody Wilkins.

One way the local news editions could save $$$s would be to rid themselves
of expensive journalists, and utilise the services of government press
agents. They already prepare the news stories in convenient ready to read
form, and based on the ratings of the commercial stations, this is what the
public prefers anyway. After all, they are our government, and we have trust
them.

I kinda knew that. Would it have helped if I had used one of these? :)

Thanks for all the answers. I have not complained as its not a big deal but
I was more intersted in finding out the cause of it and the answers here
have provided that info.

Thanks and a Merrry Xmas

Apart from local evening news and news updates, stateline, saturday
afternoon local sport and local state election coverage, the ABC signal is
already a nationally networked signal and has been that way fulltime for the
past 20 odd years now. And if anything, the ABC is not too far off from
centralising all state based local program playout from Sydney too.
