Or so it seems, based on Toyota's prediction of 9.34 million sales in
2007 compared to GM's likely total of 9.2 million this year. GM hasn't
put out a 2007 prediction yet but it seems that its global sales
continue to decline.

Can't say I'm surprised, too many bad cars out of GM for too long -
particularly in the vital US market. At least they do seem to have
finally understood that the first part of being a successful car
company is actually building good cars, not just discounted ones.

BIGT's new goal post is be the first in the world to make 10 million
cars in 12 months

Easy as pie, China, India and Russia have been marked as key areas to
reach the target, they are the booming sales markets

They've made big inroads in Western Europe as well. The Toyota
Marketing Machine has been performing its usual magic over there and
they are selling lots of cars.

When I went there in 1991, Toyota was basically unknown and Nissan was
the only Japanese brand making inroads into the European market. Went
back in 2001 and the Yaris was starting to enjoy a moderate level of
success. Went back again earlier this year and they're everywhere,
biggest Japanese brand by a long way.

Such a pity they haven't built anything I've liked in over a decade...

Me too, other than the V12 Century. MegaCruiser & some Lexus models,
everything else they make, [IMHO] is no better than any other Japanese
brand.

Really tried to like the new HiLux, but its very average, the D40
Navara is a generation better

Good marketing, REALLY good marketing

I was in the UK in 1995 and Toyota were pretty common. I saw quite alot of
this one mid-size car there, that wasn't sold here - it was bigger than a
Corolla, but not quite Camry size. It was called the Caroma or something
similar?

hmm i beg to differ alot of the japanese toyota imports are far above
the australian offerings
had the pleasure of trying out one of these awd caldina's. What i cannot
understand is why the hell toyota don't bring them in! they would steal
wrx's thunder!

Okay, I'll rephrase that - I haven't liked pretty well anything they've
sold here in the last 10 years, and the only reason I'd consider a
Toyota is if I wanted an off-roader.

If they actually sold some of their more interesting Japanese stuff
here, I'd change my tune.
