Hello. Apologies if this been discussed elsewhere, but I couldn't find it.
I want to buy a DVD player that plays Divx files. But I need it to be able to read burned data DVDs (that contain a number of Divx files). The last one I looked at was looking good but then I discovered it would only read Divx from CD-Rs.
I also want it to be multi-region and cheap as possible (I'm not concerned about brand names etc).
Can anyone suggest the best one that can do all these things?
very much appreciated.
matt.

Honestly never seen one that would only read from CDR and not DVD, every model I have ever tried has read the files from DVD

I thought I have one. My XMS 888 suddenlydecided that it does not like reading avi from DVD-R a couple of years ago. CD-R is ok still. I don't know why. Very strange.
More recently if I left the DVD-R in the tray long enough eg a few minutes for it to try, it would then be able to read the avi files.

Brilliant - thanks so much. These look spot on!
I noticed talk of 'embedded subtitles' in the linked thread and remembered one more question: Would one of these players support an avi file with a .sub or .srt subtitle file? Would it be able to load up those subtitles?
Thanks again.

Yes, but make sure the avi, idx and sub files all have the same name and in the same folder.

One lens for reading DVD and one for CD, they have different focal lengths, sounds like the DVD one is on its last legs

Interesting thing is that with DVD video disc it would have no problem reading. Put a commercial DVD in or one that is backup of the commercial DVD in, it would read them straight away. Only DVD-R with avi files it would have difficuilty.

Good news re the subtitles. Thanks again. Now I just have to find one of these players to buy.
Re: the DVD player only reading Divx from CD-R - that was definitely the case with this one (belonged to my parents - think it was a Panasonic). Said that this was the case in the manual. And I tried DVD-Rs and they wouldn't work.
Cheers,
Matt
