I know you can search for details of a new car and get a list where you
then 'make an enquiry' and they contact you..
But...! Is there a way of finding out directly what new cars are in stock
where online? Or are we at the mercy of the callback..?

Yes, carsales.com.au has a search function where you can search for new cars
currently in stock.

The callback is to make damm sure you aren't attempting to buy your car
from a dealer in an area other than you own area.
Franchisers, after all, imply 'area'
There are other reasons for the caper, not the least being that
some dealers are paying less for their stock than others. Ergo, those
dealers may tend to sell you a car for less.
Else pocket the difference in time honoured buziness fashion.
I rather suspect that GovCo is complicit in these arrangements with
certain tax breaks for (say) cuntry dealers.
Which *might* just suggest the reason the bastards haven't been dragged
through the courts for the caper.
The short answer was that you ain't on a level playing field.
You never were.
And you never will be on one.
There's no such thing.

But it doesn't tell you what dealer they're at, does it?

Carsales.com.au is excellent
I needed a black Barina this week and made a few calls. 2 bothered to
call back to say they could get one, but none had one in stock.
I looked up casales.com.au, whacked in ABS as an extra and found that
Hunter Holden had one.
A quick drive on saturday morning and $11,750 later a brand new drive
away metallic Black with mags and ABS and mats and 12 months rego, etc,
etc, shitbox is yours.

The cheapest Barina being advertised in Carsales (there are six of them)
is around $13k. It doesn't mention any of the optioned up items that you
allege you paid $2k less for inc. ORC.
The most expensive one is $16k.
Maybe you bought a superceded model...
