Alright all you experts in here.
I have been offered a VJ Charger E55. Yes the 340 version.
The car has been off the road for the last fifteen years and is a one
owner with all the paperwork etc.
What do you think it might be worth?
Red Book reckon from $6800-$10,600.
I haven't looked at it yet.

Yes.
It has been started every month since being off the road.

My little secret.
I know you like the Chargers Atec , but I have had an eye on this car
for ages.

Ignore any of the "book" prices as they usually are put together by people
with little understanding of the collectors market. I recall a rare Ducati
model being listed as $8000 when they were selling in the collectors market
for more than twice that. Sure, condition is an issue but I'd suspect you'd
best start by checking with Charger club or Shannons auction lists.

Depends on the condition, but if its in "normal" condition and bearing in
mind they were pretty rare and the 340 was supposed to be Chrysler's hot V8
for Oz anyway,..I'd pay up to 9k. If its in mint condition and its manual,
Id go to 12k,..but I was a Chysler lover.

Depends if it is a rusty heap of shit. Chargers are starting to get better
prices but they still aren't in the Falcon or Monaro ranges. The VH Chargers
are worth the most money. I got $13,000 for my VH with a 245 Hemi and an Auto.
It was just about perfect body and interior wise.

Yeah. I love the way they look. But after driving a new WRX all day the
Charger really felt like a slug.

25 - 35k if it's straight, original and rust free. Last genuine E55 I
had anything to do with sold for $18k around 4 years ago.

Sounds about right for one in fair condition, including rust and bog.

Check to make sure it's a 340, as very few of them were ever made. 318's and
360's were *far* more common (and less valuable) in Australia.
If the car's in good nick, original and is indeed a genuine E55 my guess
would be a minimum 10 large given the stupid values some things have been
selling for at Shannons.

It rarely comes down to finance these days with money readily available to
most people with employment. It comes down to time, do you have enough
spare? If not then if its in need of restoration do you have the money for
someone else to do it?
The car may be worth $2k if its in need of a FULL restoration but if little
is required IMO $20K+ is no biggie for one of them.

Don't worry Nod I do know all the codes etc.
360 's common?
As far as I am aware the only 360 Chargers that were made were for the
NSW HWP. K13 pack I believe. I used to own one.

This is what I am not sure of. When Phase 3 HO's sell for 150,K + its
hard to work out prices on cars that were once worth shit.
Look at HK-HG Monaros. Stupid money thesedays.

As far as Chrsyler engines go, the 360 is far more common here than the 340,
and by a very long way. Not that there were a lot of 360 Chargers built, but
there's a lot around these days.

Tell me about it.
I passed on a pair of HK's around three years ago as I didn't have the time
for them. One was a genuine 327 Bathurst and the other a 307 GTS. They both
needed complete restorations, but were complete original cars and I could
have had the pair for five grand.
Oh well, I sold my XW GTHO for 2800 bucks years ago, and thought that was a
decent price.
Who knew? :)

I remember when you couldn't give away Valiants, even the hardtops, then
around the end of the 80s, it became "cool" to own old Chryslers amongst
youngsters, especially the pre-tank body models. VFs and VCs in particular.
I sold my VF 770, padded vinyl roof V8 for $400 in 1979. eAnd that was lucky
as even the wreckers didnt want it.

I did mean original factory 360's.
Like the 10,000 or so XY GT Falcon/500/Fairmont/Futura's that are
around now.

I just cannot understand what the appeal is for a HK-HG. These cars
drove like pigs and handled like a barge.

Just about anything of the era did if is wasn't European.
The Monaro never appealed to me personally, but in retrospect it's quite a
car compared to the characterless plastic shit around today. I'd also add
that there's a lot of fun to be had in a car that makes buckets of torque
and handles like shit with ice skate wheels.
Taught a *lot* of people of my generation exactly what and what not to do :)

Indeed they did. I stiffened mine up with large swaybars front and rear,
heavier monaro height front springs and lowered the rear by replacing the
shortest curved leaf with an additional flat leaf. Handled well on the
freeway and open highway, surprisingly well on sweeping curves but was an
absolute pig on tight corners.
I tore a swaybar mount out of one subframe.
Before scrapping it due to a stuffed bodyshell, I seriously considered
transplanting in Jaguar suspension front and rear. I also vaguely
considered a Jag front and a top A-arm in the leaf-sprung rear to improve
lateral location (easier than transplanting the Jag IRS).

I owned a HK Prem Wagon in the early 80's.
It was Magnecor's first company car.
It was a 307 with a/c power steer/windows and tailgate window.
All the suspension had already been done.
The front sway bar was huge and the springs shocks etc had all been
done. A rear sway bar had also been fitted.
Good on straight freeway type roads but the handling even after all
the suspension mods was average.
I wonder if this car still exists today?
It might be worth something seeing it had all the factory options.
