In a move that'll probably seriously damage his acting career Matt
Newton has been charged with assaulting ex-girlfriend Brooke Satchwell.

Assault on ex-lover.
Warren Owens
January 13, 2007.
RISING TV star Matthew Newton has been charged with bashing his former
girlfriend, actor Brooke Satchwell, in a bitter break-up row. Newton,
the son of showbiz legends Bert and Patti Newton, spent 11 hours in
custody after his arrest by two police officers, court documents
reveal. He is facing four charges, including assault occasioning
actual bodily harm, and is due to appear in a Sydney court on
Wednesday. He has pleaded not guilty. The offences allegedly occurred
last year at the couple's Sydney home after Satchwell had ended their
five-year relationship, a court was told.

Newton, 29, initially was refused bail by police after his arrest on
October 16 because of concern over his "persistent violent offences",
according to court documents. He also had made "several threats to the
victim and her family" during the incidents, the court heard. NSW
police allege the young entertainer assaulted Ms Satchwell, 26, on
September 13, between 5pm and 1am, and again on October 6, between
10.30pm and 11pm, causing actual bodily harm. He also has been
charged with intimidating Ms Satchwell at that time, with the intent of
causing her physical or mental harm. Ms Satchwell, a former model and
actor who starred in Neighbours, Water Rats and White Collar Blue,
broke up with Newton in a split friends describe as "traumatic". She
has moved back to Melbourne.

"She was filming Dangerous at the time," a friend said. "She was forced
out of their home and had to move in with friends." Newton was freed
by a magistrate at Newtown Local Court in inner Sydney on strict
conditions, after spending more than 11 hours in police custody. In
opposing bail, police claimed the allegations arose from a domestic
violence incident. Newton was an actor and director "of some repute",
his lawyer told the court. He "now understands that the relationship
is over" and arrangements about the previously-shared property had been
made. Magistrate Suzanne Seagrave granted bail on condition Newton
conduct himself with good behaviour, continue to reside at his Sydney
home, comply with an apprehended violence order and not go near Ms
Satchwell nor contact her. Newton has stepped out of his famous
father's shadow, with TV gigs including a Logie-winning role in Changi
and appearances on the popular Ten comedy Thank God You're Here. He
also has a starring role in the pay-TV series Stupid, Stupid Man.
Yesterday he signed a contract with Sydney radio station Nova FM. He
was criticised for his performance in Ten's New Year's Eve broadcast,
where he engaged in a simulated sex act. Last week he made public his
new relationship with Gracie Otto, daughter of theatre veteran Barry
Otto and sister of actor Miranda Otto.

He's always appeared to be a bit of a goose. There's no reason to
resort to thuggery, unless it was a reaction to how the property
arrangement was going to be handled (perhaps not fairly or quickly
enough in his eyes).
