Not much more to it that the subject I'm afraid. When using my laptop, as
soon as my screensaver appears, which I think is set to 5 mins, it logs me
off of windows, though strangely, when I log back in, windows messenger does
not appear to have logged off ... any suggestions would be brilliant as I am
a complete novice...

If you left click on your desktop and go to the screensaver tab in the window
that appears, you should be able to click a button that says something like
power and energy saving options, and in there you should be able to adjust
when your screensaver goes on and off and when your computer goes on and off
and other things.

Amy,
It doesn't log you off, but simply locks the workstation (displays Welcome Screen if it's enabled).
