7. This week's top 50:
It's the calm before the storm - the final week where there are
are no new entries into the top 50, with record companies now
stepping up production of brand new singles for 2007.
It's a third week at number one for Beyonce Knowles with her
ballad "Irreplaceable". While this is her first solo number
one, she enjoyed a 4 week chart-topper back in 2000 with
"Say My Name" as part of the trio of Destiny's Child.
New Zealand's Evermore continue their charge to the top with
their rock ballad, "Light Surrounding You". With sales
re-ignited thanks to the song being used to promote the
return to TV screens of Aussie soap "Home & Away",
Evermore's single climbs to number 2 this week. However,
we all know Sally survives, so expect any Home & Away
generated sales to subside very quickly.
Some may have been forgiven for thinking that "Fergalicious",
the follow-up to Fergie's big top 3 hit "London Bridge", would
have little impact on the charts when it debuted at number 11
back in December. But the single has been steadily climbing
for much of its current chart life, despite temporarily dropping
out of the top 10 a couple of weeks ago. Last week it charged from
11 to 6, and now this week it gives Fergie her second solo top 5
hit in a row as "Fergalicious" moves up to number 4.
With no new entries into the top 50 (except for re-entries),
it gives existing singles a chance to climb the chart without
having singles debuting high up and pushing them down.
Some positive moves within the top 10 include Shannon Noll
and Natalie Bassingthwaighte who yoyo back up to number 5
with "Don't Give Up", as well as Nelly Furtado's "Say It
Right" which steadily climbs from number 10 to 6 this week
in its 6th week on the charts. Off-setting those upward
movements are falls by Justin Timberlake, Gwen Stefani,
Bob Sinclar and Scissor Sisters.
Two singles officially go double platinum in this week's top
50 - Sandi Thom's "I Wish I Was A Punk Rocker" and TV Rock's
"Flaunt It". Interestingly enough, Sandi's single was the
biggest selling song of 2006, and TV Rock enjoyed the second
highest seller of 2006 with their single.
