A thread for all those going to / about to go to University. Or have been.

The usual questions - what are you studying, how do you like Uni life, do you participate in campus groups, what are the advantages and drawbacks of going to Uni., do you find much of a social life developing with other students, what are the teachers like. Basically anything you want to say about Uni.

I'm going back to Uni this year to try some post-grad study. For the fun of it really and to continue something I wanted but which marriage took me away from way back when. I'll be a mature-age student this time though. I can enroll online in a couple of days and then have to sort out the HECS-help thing (don't you love the bureaucracy of it all). I wonder what campus life will be like this time. There is one group I'd like to join but I'm not sure if its right as a mature-age student to participate in groups involving young-uns. The course I'm going to do being post-grad has a large number of adult-entry so I'm not worried about that but it will be strange to go back to a situation usually associated with youth.

Good stuff, dvd Drifter. What will you be studying?

BTW, I wouldn't be concerned about re-entering uni as an older student. In my experience (and it's vast, trust me :p), mature aged students aren't treated any differently than the younger students. In my last course, the age of students was quite varied, ranging from 17 to 60+, and there was a fairly large over-30 contingent.

As for joining groups or clubs, I say go for it! Age should be no barrier to these things. Personally, I very much enjoyed the company of the older students. They tend to have far more colourful backgrounds. :p

:)

I'll be doing a Grad Dip in Information Studies. The ethics of the information age and everything from digital publishing to the freedom of information as it exists in Australia. My interest is in the freedom of speech aspect and how it pertains to such classifying and censorship bodies as the OFLC (Office of Film and Literature Classification - or "the enemy" as I think of them ;) ) and the subsequent dissemination of (prohibited) information. And just learning about information systems in the information age sounds intriguing.

Yeah, I trust I'll adapt. And the one club that interests me - as you say, why not.

That sounds fantastic. Awhile back, I completed an elective which comprised a media law module, and I found it fascinating (I think what appealed to me most is the fact that due to the frequent advent of new media, it's constantly in flux). The issue of intellectual freedom and censorship was also covered, but not in as much depth as I would have liked.

Hmm. Media Law. On my own, I've done some research into Copyright Law or at least how copyright principles are / can be affected by a body such as the OFLC which has the power to withhold the right of dissemination and force copyright holders to modify their work in order to be granted the right to such dissemination. Intellectual freedom / censorship really interests me. I'm hoping that I can tie that interest into the coursework and if there's enough basis there for a thesis maybe upgrade from Grad Dip to Masters, which I can apparently, assuming it will still be HECS based.

It's really quite invigorating. :)

I'm starting at Monash Uni Clayton campus this yeah, enrolment day is on Tuesday, feeling a bit nervous about the whole thing. I'm going to be doing a Bachelor of Science, and if I do well enough in my first year I can apply and hopefully get into Vet Science at Melbourne Uni. If that plan fails, I'll continue with the science and major in Zoology or Marine Biology. But then again after a few years I may have changed my mind completely so who knows?

Glad you found something you like doing Drifter. :) You may feel out of place with all the young people around (in the club/society), but in my experience people at uni are pretty accepting so you shouldn't have too much trouble finding new friends. I never joined any societies outside the ones related to my course, so I can't say what they're like. But they are something I wish I got to experience properly.

Right now I'm just starting my final year of a 5 year degree and the experience has had its good and bad points. The bad points include the late nights doing work, might not be so bad for you Drifter since you're not in a maths-based degree. The good points have been all the people I've made friends with, and the crazy stuff that goes on in classes. I've quite enjoyed the uni lifestyle, where you can head on down to the pub for drinks and trivia when you've had enough of classes for the day. It'll be sad to see it go.

At the moment I'm doing my lab work for thesis over the summer. I quite like doing the work, but nothing seems to be doing what it's supposed to and it's getting frustrating. I've managed to get fungus into the chemical product I'm making and if I can't get it out I have to make the whole thing again from scratch. *sigh* Two weeks of work down the drain...

Aw, good luck, Zoidy. Doing my Honours thesis was pretty much the worst experience of my life. Nah, not really; I just happened to leave it (like I do with most things) to the last minute, and almost had a nervous breakdown in my last few weeks. Thankfully it all came together in the end, but damn, I'll never forget the anxiety!

Thanks :) I did that with the literature review and started going crazy from doing nothing but thesis for weeks on end. Just barely managed to get a pass in a couple of subjects because I didn't have time for them. Never again. Never ever ever doing that again. That's why I'm doing lab work over summer, so by the time uni goes back I'll know how not to do certain parts of the experiements. :rolling:

Howdy!,
studying:
gonna be starting my 2nd year studying Industrial design at Unisa this year. already enrolled, though i sort of dislike enrolling online (maybe because i'm still on dial-up :| ).

Basically anything you want to say about Uni.

well, uni life.... i find that it's quite independent, you work at your own pace and however you want. but then again, theres no slacking off, or things will start piling up!

campus groups.... i.....well i haven't joined anything :PI nothing of interest so far i guess

advantages and drawbacks? well for me, a drawback is that the campus is a 1 hour drive for me  an advantage, the facilities offered on campus make things a heck of a lot easier.

social life, well... i found many to be .... nice.... :| ..... nah, everyone is pretty much mature and that makes it easier to make bonds and friendships.

teachers, they're all cool. i found the lecturers to be casual which makes it easier to approach if you've got a question (which is good, coz i'm a pretty nervous guy).

other stuff: as afterglow said, its all cool if you;re an older student. i've got some older students in my course and they're pretty cool, and yeah, theyre treated no different, by both lecturers and students.

good luck with your studies, and especially good luck with enrolling (especially if it's online) :p

Well, the date they listed and emailed me for enrollment was incorrent...it was for continuing students...commencing students enrol next Tuesday. Hardly confidence inspiring but nevertheless.

I was sent some publicity about Orientation Day (or week) parties and events. I'm going to go but I feel kind of nervous. I know some here have said that as an adult student I shouldn't worry, but I do... Last time out I had to miss the orientation stuff... now though I have a degree I'm curious about the Orientation events. Am I technically a new student after all this time? How diffferent can it be? I'm just nervous about the whole thing... going back to study, being around other students, etc...:) Still, as nervous as I am, I think this is going to be most enjoyable. I like study and research, what can I say...

not much happens in orientation but the tour around the place and activities that allow you to meet a lot of new people.
and also as much as you might be nervous.. everyone else would be too.. because they're all starting something new. :p

dvd_Drifter, You're from Adelaide yeah?
is it UniSA or Adelaide Uni that you got that notice from? cos i heard from my friend that Adel Uni has a orientation week (a.k.a O' week). its more like a camp than a tour. (or so i heard, don't take my word for it though, best to ask them if this is the case).
from what i recall, i had a orientation day at UniSa which pretty much was just as Las described it.

UniSA - Magill. The flyer was for an O-Day Party with further details on the web about events that week but I've yet to look them up. I'll go for the experience of it I guess. But I'm not really there for the social aspects... though that would be a benefit though, no denying it. :)

 Confess Drifter, you're trying to seduce the hot young 18 year olds and giving us all this lame nonsense about enjoying study and research.

Now I resent that accusation. As if I as a responsible, mature, older man would have any interest in young, intelligent, attractive women just beginning to explore their sexuality. Why, why the thought is just preposterous. An insult. How dare you suggest such a thing.

18 is the legal age of consent right? ;)
