Sorting out me recent holiday photos...

As I really need to learn about this stuff while being
as totally Darwinian as I can.

My Emu was giving me increasingly weird looks as the
days went on ...

There is actually a bit of force back on your hand doing
that -prolly don't wanna drop it.

I was impressed. Diesel in a flame torch can be good,
however I think this is more fun.

No, very real. The tree in the background was not harmed
though as its way back in the paddock.

What I should have done, but didnt, was take to the blackberry
bushes round the back of the shed. I should have thought of that.

That is where the kitchen sink in the shed drains, so I guess they
do better than average.

We had a pump and injector service room where I did my apprenticeship
and part of my education was learning how to make a flame thrower:-)
The best flame throwers were made by holding a cig lighter near a pintle
type injector nozzle just as you pumped the test lever:-)
6-8 foot long flames were achievable with a bit of effort but you had to
be careful that the room was clear of diesel fumes, one unsuspecting
apprentice learned this after the flame ignited some stray fumes, the
resulting explosion blew out most of the windows:-)

LPG fun is less effort, however none of this stuff should be done
indoors, and while outdoors - judge several factors such as
fuel properties, and wind direction.

Then, it's all good fun.

its called a BLEVE
or Boiling Liquid Expanding Vapour Explosion.
and your average 5 kilo gas bottle will reduce a 4 bedroom brick and tile
house to rubble in less time than it took you to read this.
If the tank is ruptured, say by someone skylarking around with it, the
liquefied gas escapes in a rush, causing the liquid to boil off very
quickly, that's a BLEVE.
Now if the Liquid is something like LPG and some twat is playing with fire
at the time you can get a VCE, now that stands for Vapour Cloud Explosion or
more commonly called a FIRE BALL !!
All those years as a Hospital Fire Officer did actually pay off :-)

Which doesn't answer the question of how an LPG tank is meant to explode.
What you describe is where the tank is first ruptured by some unspecified
means, allowing the liquid to escape and evaporate, which at some point will
become flammable once the gas is between 2% and 10% of the air mixture
(above and below that mix, LPG won't burn).

From what I understand, the only way to get an LPG tank to explode is to
heat it such that the tank fails from the pressure buildup - exactly the
same as with a tank of water. If you want some flames with your explosion,
you'll need an external source of flame as the explosion itself will be
endothermic with no hope of self-ignition.

It is indeed.

And you've *seen* this happen, or just heard about it from some bloke who'se
cousin's friend's girlfriend's uncle once told them about it?

Too bad you never got to see any actual gas tank explosions in real life
though, huh?

Well you know, I have never actually, in real life seen a gas bottle destroy
a house, but I have seen the videos that are used for fire training all over
the world, and yes, it will flatten a fairly substantial house.
so how about you, do you actually have ANY experience in the field or do you
just get your jollies thinking your smarter than you really are.
Maybe you should spend a few hours in a burns unit or better yet how about
you volunteer with your local bush fire brigade and get a clue.
now why not go back to pulling the wings off flies.
