View Full Version : Holden Ute - what's a decent price for mid-90s model?

Looking to get a second vehicle, mainly to get to and from work. Someone
suggested that I look at a ute, aside from being basic transport it can
be used to cart stuff around in.
Good idea, I thought. Anyway, I've been browsing carsales.com.au. The
prices and condition of what's available seems to vary somewhat, with
most of them having more than 160,000km on the clock.
I shouldn't focus on Holden or Ford, but if I widen the scope of my
search, what would you guys recommend for a ute around the $5k mark?

For that price, dont expect to get anything too flash. Maybe a flogged
Holden/Falcon or a flogged Japanese ute.

The problem with that is that Commodore and Falcon utes seem to have
very good resale - far better than the passenger versions. For
instance, a few months back I was at a car fair here in Canberra and
VR/VS Utes were on the market for more like $10k.
Have you considered a wagon instead? Almost as practical, but far
cheaper.

I'm not. Just something to get to work and back when I'm too lazy to
suit up for the bike ride, or when I need to cart rubbish to the tip or
get stuff from say, Bunnings or whatever.

That kind of money will buy you either a money pit Holden ute or a good
Falcon in the XF - XG range, and the Falcon would be a *far* better choice
as far as ute's go.

Might be able to get a Hilux pickup truck. I don't know much about the
Holden and Ford utes though.
Good idea to get a ute or pickup though ... very good idea.

A flogged Jap ute will still be going long after the Ford or Holden utes
are fucked
Anything Toyota will be very reliable, especially a diesel
Nissan Navara were also pretty good(my sister had one for 10 years on a
farm and it was still in very good nick when she got rid of it)
plus you can get them in twin cabs if the whole tribe want to go to tye
dump and watch you brake ya back unloading it
and for max usability, get one with a tray top not a styleside ute

The "tribe" is long grown. Anyway, these days I'd expect THEM to unload
the ute....
A two seater is all I'd need. Chances are the missus wouldn't see a need
to ride in it, anyway.

Bullshit :)
A flogged Jap ute will be just as shitty and unreliable as anything else so
abused. In fact, one of the most reliable utes you can get your hands on is
an XF Falcon, but don't let that get in the way of your ignorant bias :)

Nah, not really. A ute would be easier to load crap into. Particularly
as we're going to be doing a shitload of renovations on our place, so
for carrying building materials, etc. a ute would be a better choice.

The low ute/sedan ratio would explain it. In the VR/VS it was about 10 to
1, sedan to utes sold. Compare that to last year, where the ratio for the
Ford, for instance, was less than 3 to 1. It's unlikely the resale will
hold up as well for the current generation of utes, in the longer term.

Whats wrong with a Wagon with a towbar and a $500 trailer? Leave the trailer
at home full of heavy stuff and drive around all day with a nice light load.
And you get the full convienience of four doors 5seats etc.

I don't need 4-5 seats, Also, I won't be carrying around any loads,
light or heavy on a permanent basis. As I said, it would, for the most
part, be what I drive to work when I can't be bothered riding the bike,
and on days off, to pick stuff up from the local hardware store, take
rubbish to the tip, or whatever.
And I can tow a trailer for that extra capacity.
