View Full Version : Peugeot Turbo Diesel 405 -- Reviews/Feedback

I saw an ad on a car window for someoen with a Peugeot 405 1997 Turbo
Diesel with 3220,000 on the clock selling for $7900. There was a minor
dent in the bonnet, but it seemd in reasonable nick. Aparrently it had
been recently serviced, had log books etc.
I was wondering whether this sounded cheap, expensive or about right.
Having just spent a bucket load servicing and reinsuring my Astra
($2000!), and thinking about having a car I could run on biodiesel, I
was wondering if I'd be ahead selling the Astra 2004 (70,000kms),
paying out the loan and getting something like this.

Seems a lot, just someone trying to catch the diesel wave!
I recently looked for a 406 HDi wagon, and it seemed possible to get
into one of those with less k's for same money. Having said that, 1997
would have to have been one of the very last of the 405's, and as a
rule of thumb I usually look for a car that had already been in
production for a few years, rather than buying an early example of a
new model. It's just that most factories need a while to iron out any
bugs on the production line (for the Japs, 6 months should do it, but
for the French........who knows!!)
There are still heaps of diesel 405's getting around in country areas
with a squillion k's on them, so maybe they're a good thing for rural
Oz.

The closest I could find on the net were two 1996 models for about
$9500 (odo=1000km --- probably a zero or two missing at least) and
$10,000 (odo= 95,000)

just over 3 million k's you say!
I have a 405 mi16 and it went like a scald cat, but hard to get parts for,
they were exy, nobody knew anything about how to fix them, including dealers
and specialty euro mechanics.
it broke often, and was the most unreliable car ive ever had!.
I paid about 18,000 for it, and after a few years of trying to sell it, gave
it away for 3k. no dealer would take it as trade.
I vowed never to buy a Peugeot again after that!

Yikes, must have forgotten about the 1 in front!! I've obviously been
away from the industry for too long, but anyone coming in for a
valuation of any 405 (diesel or otherwise) would have been lucky to
get more than a couple of grand (for a low k's example in excellent
condition).
If this is what owners are all asking then so be it. But they're only
going to sell it to someone who *really must have that exact type of
car*, rather than someone searching across a particular price
category.
There is this, but not much info;
http://tinyurl.com/2s2oh7
I'd look at something else, or wait a few months until the dealer gets
sick of seeing it gathering cobwebs!

Three years older, and no infor on Kms. Perhaps it doesn't matter if
the engines and drive train are especially good.

Just thought, if you can get a 1996 model 406, were they still making
405's a year later?
I know that they're French so earth/human/logical/simple/post-17th
century rules don't usually apply, but maybe the dealer is doing what
dealers do best ; )
