Whenever I try to play a .mpg file in any player (WinAmp, DivX or WMP9)
I get a large green box in the area where the file would usually play.
There's audio but no video.

Other filetypes seem to play fine. My graphics card is a Nvidia 7800GT.

Any ideas as to why this is happening?
Cheers.

Sounds like you don't have the correct video codec to play the file.

The easiest thing to do is also the "messiest" (in that you'll install
far more than you need). Just download one of the free codec packs from
http://www.free-codecs.com. These three are quite popular and safe:

XP Codec Pack http://www.free-codecs.com/XP_Codec_Pack_download.htm
Codec Pack All in 1
http://www.free-codecs.com/Codec_Pack_All_in_1_download.htm
K-Lite Codec Pack http://www.free-codecs.com/K_Lite_Codec_Pack_download.htm

The "cleanest" thing to do is download Gspot Codec Information Appliance
from http://www.headbands.com/gspot/ and then open one of your problem
video files in it, and it will tell you which video codec it was encoded
with, and whether it's installed on your computer. Once you have the
codec name, google for it, then download and install it.

Another possiblity is to download the VLC media player from
http://www.videolan.org/ - it plays pretty much anything you can throw
at it straight out of the box.

Media Player Classic is in the same boat, and I believe it also comes
with some of the free codec packs listed above - see
http://sourceforge.net/projects/guliverkli/ or
http://www.free-codecs.com/download/Media_Player_Classic.htm

Where do you get this Windows 6.5 freeware from? And is it as good as
the normal Windows?
