This is a response from a previous thread but its now shot done.

Yeah I chose the R2 over R1, first because I didnt not want Sorceres Stone in my title. I know Canada has Philosopher, but as I was only ordering a single disc it wasnt economically viable.

Also the other changes.. If the movie was made where they say letter box, but is changed to suit the Americans to see mail box, i want the original. Same as calling it Football, but then it was changed to Soccer for the Americans.

Too many movies have been catered for Americans in the pass, ie name change of the Bond movie form Licence Revoked to LIcence to Kill during to the US lack of knowledge on what Revoked means.

So therefore hence why I chose R2 over R1, just plain sick of the over catering for the US.

THEREFORE I HIGHLY RECOMMEND PURCHASING IT FROM ENGLAND.

And it is idiots like danielb with their pro pan and scan nonsense who think they are "paying for half da picture" when watching a film in letterbox. Harry Potter is not a kiddie film. It will be hailed as a classic in years to come just like the Wizard of Oz.Actually, I'm not PRO PAN AND SCAN you moron, I like to experience movies in their original (or in the case of RoboCop Criterion)/director prefered ratio. Harry Potter isn't a clasic, and never will be.

Oh and just so you know why you can't find it in widescreen: The Wizard of Oz was shot 4:3 (in fact WideScreen hadn't been invented). Now here's something for you: Widescreen was invented so that the cinema had something to offer that the TV dosen't! And you whine about Region 4?

Region 4 has its strong points:

* A wide range of excellent films
* Many with good special features
* Cheap prices
* Oh and PAL

My DVD collection is maybe 50% R4.

ALL I SAID was that kids (who except for you and orko) are the only ones who watch Harry Potter prefer fullscrean because they don't have the capacity to understand widescreen.

If I were you I'd be far more concerned with getting the uncut versions of many films. I'd be more concerned about flippers. Because I know that every decent movie is shown in its correct aspect ratio.

It's been a bad week, don't even think about trying to argue you brainless harry potter fan.

By the way ORKO, I agree with your post mainly :). And I know about Licenced to Kill, but if you ask me it's a better title anyway. BTW I thought the R2 would be much more expensive then the Can, I stand corrected.

I wouldn't say that! :D Whatever happen to all the horror/cult films that R1 got on DVD?

But then again people have their own taste in movies.

Why don't you read my post Daniel B? I never complained about Wizard of Oz not being widescreen. I am fully aware of aspect ratios of the golden age. I was just comparing a modern and past classic.

You are just anti-Hype. You judge a film by its popularity. If everyone likes it you think that there is something wrong with you liking it as well. You think it is simply following the crowd. I bet if Anchor Bay released Harry Potter you would be drooling over it.

Kids grow up. Might as well teach the values of widescreen while they are young so they do not grow up into "I'm not payin for half da picture" morons.

I like Region 4 aswell!

dvd_rulez you state they havent released the horror cult titles. This is only one sub branch. I understand you want these titles to be released, but R4 got others Region 1 never got.

Best examples has probably been the extremely long delay of Buffy.
Other eg's where we get the best version

The Sting, and Happy Gilmore.. We get W/S
Two Hands - we get the DVD. I understand it is a local film but the cult classics are local US.

I stand behind R4, I just think Warner were a bit short sited in the F/S Potter release.

Yeah sure we get a few 16:9 transfers over the yanks but the only real winner their is the yanks as they can now import a quality disc for a fraction of the price due to conversion rates.

What about the rental windows? It's not bad enough we have to wait six months for films to be released here in theatres then we have to put up with a rental window when it hits DVD. Where the hell is Blade 2. Coming July 10th or something. And what of Joy Ride. Already out for months on !DVD! in the US. Now being released theatrically sometime in the foreseable future in the crappy new title of Road Kill. Because we aussies don't know what a joy ride is. What a joke.
