I see that Simon is active on this NG again. Some time ago he
was asking about the lack of cell broadcast (area info, or cell
name) messages on 3's network.

The standards covering this have been out for ages but a Finnish
document dated July 2005 says:

"In 3G networks the equipment manufacturers have not implemented
CBS, although it will be implemented in later versions."

Nothing like a manufacturer picking and choosing which part of a
standard they can be bothered implementing. Still, it's better than
ignoring the standard and doing it in a proprietary way.

If you have one of the fantastic Telstra ZTE F850 phones, you can find out
more info here:

I don't see anything there about base transceiver stations or
base station controllers.

Did you expect anything less from a zombified Telstra shill? ;)

Stop it, Bell. You'll go blind.

It has very little value, so who cares?

"will"?

Anyway, a mate has one of these ZTEs. Had a play with it. While it looks
cheap, so far he's had no problems with it, functions well, pulls a
signal in as good as my Samsung A501 and ergonomically feels better than
my Samsung.
