Have the chance to get JBL ESC 360 Home theatre System for just over $500 and was wondering if anyone has opinions/thoughts on taking sound from their optical out on their DVD.

What's the verdict?

Do you mean the difference between using the decoder on the DVD and the decoder on the Amp/Receiver?

Optical or Coaxial digital output from DVD to amplifier is definitely the way to go.
