When recording TV shows etc, how many megabytes does a 2-hour long movie end up being? Does it usually fit on 1 blank DVD?

depends what setting you record in, in high quality only 1 hour will fit on a disk, with a standard quality you can record 2hrs. (on my pioneer you cannot tell the difference between the two)

...and I find the long/extended play qualities to be good enough for many purposes. Let's you get more on the disc of course.

Panasonic Hard Drive/DVD Recorders work quite well.
You can record it to the Hard Drive First with the highest quality. Edit out the ads etc. Then copy the video content to dvd if you want to keep it stored. This way you will get the best quality possible as during the copying process it will reduce the quality (if required) just enough to fit it all on one disc.
Therefore a 2-hour long movie would be 4.5 Gigabytes, one whole dvd.

I have my pioneer DVD/HDD recorder set to record in LP which ends up being about 1 Hour = 1 GB
but no matter what quality I originally record it at I can change the quality when I burn it to DVD :)
