What are our thoughts.
I'm beginning to think blu ray may be the winner here. Looking at the titles, and studio backing, its looking good. Only draw back is the region coding of bluray compared to the HD DVD. Region A (JAP/US) looks to have a nice selection, so an imported PS3 would solve the film watching needs I think.
Anyone else looking at venturing into the next DVD generation, or holding back until a winner is declared. From what I've seen blu ray looks like it'll be more of a success than those umd's!

I don't feel the need to jump in just yet (TV in the living room isn't HD) if I was thinking to jump in though I would probably buy the add on HD DVD drive for the Xbox 360 that I already have and get a PS3 to do Blu-Ray, there's not enough titles available at the moment for it to be enticing enough to justify.
I'd probably do it this way for a generation or so of players to see which way it went, if one format died out I'd still have useable game consoles, I'm sure it will take quite some time before we see any clear direction this will go, things will sort out much quicker if we get more combo HD DVD/Blu-Ray players like the LG, combo units would also help drive the price down.
Sony traditionally lose don't they (format wars).
But I think I will stay away for now, too much uncertainty at the moment.
If I was going to do anything it would be something along the lines of the LG multi-blue players (are they available yet?).

Combo player is probably the way to go. I was looking at the HD DVD add on for the 360, which at $250 is a dead set bargain.
Then maybe a bluray player down the track, but seeing who's supporting what the $250 may even be dead money.
Damn companies with there multiple formats, its a bit new to me. I was too young for the Betamax vs VHS battle, and DVD / R etc, I've never bought a blank DVD in my life so that one went past me too

Yes and no, your down the track purchase will be at least $250 cheaper than if you bought now so even if you do end up with a useless add on your total cost of ownership would still be lower than if you jump into a standalone player now

Looking at it that way true. Naturally if 360 games are released on HD DVD, which IMHO they should (3 discs for blue dragon is too many if you can have it on 1 HD DVD) then it'll be a necessity.
Surprised that JB Hi Fi aren't stocking HD. I saw the bluray display and went searching on the HD display. Didn't know at the time they weren't supporting. Wonder what the pay off is in it for JB Hi Fi.

At the moment they have no players and there isn't a lot of media available anyway, right now they wouldn't want to be sending mixed messages and risk people holding off and their Blu-Ray sales sitting idle as a result, I suspect their single format support statement is more political than anything else, if the format takes off they will change their tune pretty quickly

I didn't mind the Beta-max format, TV studios were still using it way after the general public went to VHS, unfortunately it's not always the best product that survives a conflict like that... mass production & flooding markets with cheap supportive hardware is what wins in the end IMHO ;)
HD ~ BluRay? seeing as I (and many others) already have substantial libraries of regular DVD titles, simply hanging off till there's a versatile (supportive) player DVD/HD-DVD/BluRay would appear most prudent :)
