Really its about all you will get for $3000
Some of those mid 80's cars are are going out at just over $3,best save
your pennies for a couple years and get one of those.

I bought an Air cond VN for $600 (needed a new door, which cost $40,)
Used it as a tow car for 5 months, put it on the race track for 12
hours to instruct potential racers, gave it to my son to use to and
from work.
VNs are very cheap, economical, tough and easy to buuy and sell..

Grab the trading post and have a look at some Toyota Corona or Corolla
or early Camry
maybe a Nissan Bluebird or Pintara

if you can't find a carb engined 4cyl car for under $3000 then you need
to go outside a bit more often

Should be able to score a good late 80s or early 90s car, possibly with
options for that coin if you look hard enough. Eg a few months back I
drove past an AE101 Corolla which looked to be in good nick, with $3k on
the window.

VN Commodores go for not very much these days, servicing/parts
availability are cheap. Picked up mine (5.0L V8 Berlina+auto) which is
dead straight, mechanically good (touch wood) and immaculate inside for
$2500.
I've seen the 6 cylinder models (admittedly, probably shit heaps) going
from $600.
Cheers,
Andy.

Early Commodore or Falcon would get you something "decent" for the money if
you're buying prvately, but you need to look around.
A mate of mine bought an EF Fairmont in absolutely *mint* condition with
less than 120k on the dial for 2 grand at the auctions last week. 3 grand
would get you a very good late model Magna with low mileage.

Does he intend to keep it or did he buy it to resell?
If he wants to sell it I'm interested as I'm looking for another car for
my son.

He buys everything to resell, and the last I heard he was swapping the
Fairmont for an AC/DC tig welder and a tyre changing machine. Don't know if
he has yet though, so I'll find out.
It's a *very* clean car, and I was quite impressed with it for the money.
Totally shit colour, being that light coffe brown metalic they came in, but
a clean tidy car just the same.
