Hello
Can anyone please tell me if there are any Ford 1300 engines that
carry a 16 valve head?I understand that they were a few in Europe, I
am looking to Turbo- Charge a Ford 1300 but I hear that there is a 16
valve head that can fit onto the 1300 block.
Any suggestions wil be appreciated.
Thanks,
Mike

Are you talking the 1300 cross-flow motors from Escorts? Or something
else?
If so, I think there was a BDA 1600 motor that had 16 valve heads, and
it seemed the often stroked it and bored it to get closer to 1800.
If this is what you are talking about I imagine the cost is high and
you would still need to swap the pistons as the 1300 cross-flow ones
had the chamber in the piston, whereas the BDA will need flat-top
pistons.
Go on... turbo charge it! Surely it would let you wind up the power
more than a 16 valve head would, plus there would be more spares lying
around for one of these than a BDA head...

Why bother, Id be buying a 4AGE Toyota motor (1600cc) and fitting a Toyota
Supercharger (Thinking of an MR2 Import here). 16Valves, 170 HP no worries
and reliable as all buggary. Or you could destroke it to 1300cc if thats
what ya want. Or if the size is a drama try a Turbo charade motor or
similar.
Is this for a Rear wheel drive Ford such as an Escort or Anglia?

Why bother to fit a supercharger, just buy a 4AGZE which has one standard:-)

Hello
This is for a Mark 1 Escort Turbo Charged we are already beating
4AGE Toyotas fitted into 1984 Toyota Starlets.A factor of 1.5 is used
to approximated the amount of CCs that is why we do not go over
1300cc(1300@1.5=1,950).
The BDA head can work but at US $5,000.00 I find it expensive, we
heard that there was a Pinto 1300 with 16 valve heads produced in
Europe. I would love to locate one of these engines.
Kind regards
Mike

Thanks Dale
We use an old Escort 1300 block and we have use various pistons in
the past. This is a low budget project so at the moment the BDA is
above our heads.

Hi Mike,
I don't recall a 1300 Pinto, although I think they used that block as
a 2300 or 2200 in the US. I think if it was a Pinto, i.e. the same
block, then the stroke would have to be pretty small to get that
capacity. Again, if it was a Pinto, then I think the cosworth head was
the only "production" 16 valve head for it.
The BDA head was as far as I know the only thing you will get that has
16 valves for the 'Kent' block. I think even the twin cam escorts were
8 valves...?
I remember reading somewhere ages ago (maybe Turbo Australia) that
they suggested that the benefit of 16 valves was much less when
turbocharged. I can sort of understand that as you are pressurising
the intake anyway.
Go the other way, get hold of a 1100 crank and see what that would
take :)
Dale.

Thanks very much Dale
We also turbo charged a Lotus Escort that carries a 8 valve head, but
that pushed us in a bigger group. That block was 1593 cc ,using the
1.5 factor that took us over 2000cc.
My research tells me that in Finland during the 1970s a few guys were
Turbo charging 1300 Pintos with very good results but they did not say
what head was used.
Regards
Mike
