Its a phenomona I noticed when I let a female acquaintance drive my
treasured first car, a '55 Hillman (best pomme car made in that bracket
BTW). They dont pause when they push/pull the gearstick into the neutral
gate,..its just whammo, the stick goes straight thru without a breather,
with accompanying protests from the gearbox.
Since then, I've noticed my daughter does the same thing in her Pulsar. When
I happen to drive it, the synchros, especially 2nd was decidely worse for
the experience.
Anyone noticed similar thing ?

Yes. Precicesly the reason for the unhappy 2nd gear in my liberty.
I generally only let her drive the auto for pretty much that reason.

Yeah, most mechanically under educated people do it that way.
Its the driving instructors fault, as a rule. It also happens when
they take you out to learn to drive a truck.
They are in a hurry to change, not realising that it takes a few
microseconds for the synchro to catch up, or that the stress can be
taken of when increasing engine speed or loosing some revs on other
changes.
A refresher course dealing with this would be beneficial to fix things
like this.

Yeah, I wince with every gearchange, everytime I ride as passenger in her
car,.. it doesnt matter how much you try to tell them to change gear the
proper way, they just don't get it.

Guess its easier if you can visualise whats happening, but even if you arent
mechanically minded, you'd think they would get the idea that its easier to
change gear slower with a slight pause in neutral.

I've also noticed in one case revving the tits off the poor thing
before doing exactly that.

Tell em now!
Will they listen though?

Just let the missus drive an old car. When it eventually dies, replace it.

I tend to turn my cars over every 5-6 years anyway, so I haven't had to deal with the results of this yet.

Women have ears for two reasons: the first is to give a man something to
drag them by when they've escaped from the kitchen, and the second is for
somewhere to hand their glasses on.

The gender is not relevant. Crap drivers come with and without
testicles.

Synchromesh, BTW, is an evil thing invented so that pussies can change
gear. It's not neccessary, adds weight and slows down the gear change.
So there!

Hmm nope spent nothing at the mechanics in 7 years really other than a
cooked engine, I did pull a 90mm mangled sycro clip out of the drain plug a
few years ago, but it still takes a hammering anyway, only got 365,000km on
it so far.

If you just force the stick into gear, the synchros, or whats left of them,
cant bring the two dog-clutch thingos to the same speed to effedct the next
gearchange, so you get the crunching noises or worse, you get locked out and
any additional force will put stress on circlips involved on the shafts?
That's about as techo as I can get.

Jason
