I am having problem with a 1991 Toyota Corolla.
While driving, it shut down and would not start up again.
After checking, fuel was pumping to carb ok,plugs getting spark.
The next day with a lot of cranking it mist and farted to life but did not run to well. It was ok with lite throttle but would miss fire under heavier throttle.
Now after fitting new carby kit and fuel pump it starts up fine, runs good until
it warms up and the auto choke shuts off and then it coughs and farts again with bad idle fluctuation.
Someone claims the catalytic converter can cause these problems.
Has anyone come across this problem or have any Ideas, Thanks.

Yes but check your fuel too.
It could be contaminated. Water is the main culprit.
Drop in a liter of metho. It will run rough till you clean out the
tank, after which it may be fixed.

Yer tried it with a clean can of fuel straight to carb..

Have yer washed under yer bonnet and got yer water in yer dissy? Might be
other electrical, coil or main coil HT lead etc. stab-stab in the dark.

yeah Leads ,one dodgy, they can still spark(look ok),but cause
problems, those cats do get blocked but.....
I take it this is not EFI...could be blocked jets......seems unlikey
Put your hand over the throttle body at the same time as giving it a
large rev, carefull not to totaly block off the throttle body as it will
stall or suck your hand down, sometimes this will release junk in the
jets, failing that look at the running jets if you can while it is having
a fit.

As Al said, ignition leakage to earth or ground, can give those symptoms. eg
a cracked coil insulator, a cracked or carbon-tracked distributor cap or old
plug leads which are well past replacement time. The general rule is, high
voltage (ie spark) will take the least path of resistance to ground. Now as
you open the throttle, the resistance across the spark-plug gaps, increases,
and if there is a lower path to earth thru a crackd insulator on the coil or
dizzy cap, you'll lose spark all together, giving erratic engine behaviour.
An engine which has plenty of fuel but dies on throttle opening ( as in
trying to drive off) is a prime ignition fault candidate.

Have you had a look at the plugs?
Are they black as?

A petrol engine I'm not good with, however yeah all the usual
culprits ... however the OP seemed to have checked fuel
and spark.
Fuel filter also replaced though?, new fuel pump up to the task?
OP changed fuel related stuff which changed the outcome,
I'd still be looking at fuel related stuff.
Just as a related side safety note ... *never* place your hand
over the air intake of a diesel engine and give it a good rev,
unless you don't want to keep it. I did that once only at *idle*,
and had a very sore hand afterwards.

If the system dies on power it can be spark related and sounds like it
could be faulty ignition leads, too large a spark gap, ignition
breaking down under pressure. (probbly in side dizzy cap)
What sort of ignition system? Tronic?

Check for TINY crack in the dizzy cap ,
Plus all the other very helpful hints from the other contributors .
Are you a member of RAC or something ? They may home in on it
straight away if you call them and say it wont start or such and they
have all the gear in teh trucks these days
And on diesels and hands over carby on petrol donks SHUDDER wear
wool or nomex just in case of back fire and flash back
burns are VERY painful -take care cobber
