I should warn that this post also contains a general whinge ;)

I bought the XMS855D just after xmas and i had a lot of problems with the loader. Sometimes it would read a disc, sometimes it wouldn't. After a few weeks the loader died altogether and no discs would spin at all.

I took it back to Strathfield at the start of Feb, they wouldn't replace it but sent it away for repair. No problem, I got given a return date of mid Feb... but thats the last i've seen of it.

Since mid Feb they just keep telling me its on it's way back and it'll be here in a few days, I get the same story every time I ring and no one can tell me why it never arrives. So after close to a dozen phone calls and a month of chasing them around i've given up and am looking for another player.

Is there a Panasonic or LG with the same Mediatek chip as the XMS? I don't mind paying up to about $200 , i just want something that works and something I can get from one of the bigger stores , Target, Myers , HN etc.

Thanks,
Rich

Not answering your question as such but just to clarify there was a batch of these with a loader problem (premature failure) the following delivery was help up as a result of this and is still being resolved, also these are a replacement warranty, not repair so unfortunately whoever you have been dealing with was not familiar with the procedures.

At the moment though there is very little stock around for them to get one from another store for you, they can do that if needed though. If you have continual problems to get this sorted PM me your details and I can have someone contact you to resolve the issue.

Earlier LG models used the MTK chipset but they use Zoran in more recent models, you will find though that even brand name units that use the same chipset will have some limitations, file support may not be what you are used to.

Hi, thanks for the explanation. They (Chermside, QLD) told me today it'll be in early next week, i'm not very hopeful, but i'll wait till then and PM you the details if nothing gets resolved.

They would have to be getting a new one in from another store, make sure they are, if you get any other story let me know and I'll get someone in touch with you

Out of interest Jok11n,

Why is there always so much Bull Sh_t from staff at these stores? I am begining to think it is a trait that is common to the individuals, or is it part of the corporate culture and they encourage it?

Nowdays I wouldn't believe a salesman from these sorts of stores, even if he was telling me my arse was on fire.

Cheers

There's good and bad everywhere unfortunately, it's not encouraged at all that's for sure, every retailer suffers at the hands of their staff to some extent.

The stores are currently being being offered for franchise (around 12 already are) this is having a positive effect as there is better service when people that own stores run them.

Any chance the Thomastown (melbourne) store will be franchised?

I might go back there one day if so.

As discussed in this thread (http://phorums.com.au/showthread.php?t=224574), LG have a new MediaTek based player going for under a hundred bucks.

DivX/XviD support should be a least as good as the previous LG players with the added bonus of Custom MPEG Matrix support.

BAC

Had forgotten about that one :) I wonder if all of them will go back to MTK, I don't know that they were so successful with their Zoran based units

Thanks Bac, i'll probably get one those LG's this weekend.

Regards the XMS, they last told me they would call Monday 19th when it came in.

Monday came and went without contact and I waited till today (Thursday), I called them this morning and still no player. I got a guy who had no idea what I was talking about and wasn't all that interested either way so he passed it on to someone else ..... who of course isn't in today.

I worked in retail when i was younger so i know there's nothing worse then being stuck with a p*ssed off customer when you have no idea of what's going on, but jeez, if nothing else, at least they could feign interest

Its getting kinda comical now, it's been "due back in a few days", for longer then I've physically owned it.

jok11n, I'll PM you the receipt details when i get home and hopefully someone can sort something out.

Thanks, Rich

Thanks for your help. They gave me a highlander dvx-4350 model as replacement. Tested out a few different discs and it seems to work pretty well.

Thanks,
Rich

According to the LG site this model only plays DivX ... do you know if it does play XviD (and they just don't list it?)

The manual for the DV276 says:
Playable DivX file:
.avi, .mpg, .mpeg
Playable Subtitle format:
SubRip(*.srt/*.txt)
SAMI(*.smi)
SubStation Alpha(*.ssa/*.txt)
MicroDVD(*.sub/*.txt)
SubViewer 2.0(*.sub/*.txt)
TMPlayer(*.txt)
Dvd Subtitle System(*.txt)
VobSub (*.sub) b Sub/idx, stream based format.
Playable Codec format:
"DIVX3.xx ", "DIVX4.xx ", "DIVX5.xx ",
"MP43 ", "3IVX ".

MT1389 based players such as this will play most incarnations of XviD, major exception is those encoded with 3 warp point GMC (uncommon).

99% of the stuff that comes down from the net is fine.
