Hi all,
Not sure if this is the best area for it, if not, mods feel free to move it.
I have a Pioneer DVR111D DVDRW drive, and if I play a movie on DVD-R with subtitles, playback is 'jerky', but only when the subtitles attempt to display. If a scene starts up without subtitles, its ok until they start speaking.
It can be with any brand of blank, but does not occur on a standalone DVD player. Is there any known issue with the firmware with this drive? I can't find any reference to it anywhere.
Thanks.

It could be a problem with the DVD playback software. Try a different one.
Your PC may not be powerful enough to handle DVD playback. Check the CPU utilisation while a disc is playing. If its at 100% upgrade your PC.
Your drive may need a firmware update. Look here (http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_firmware.php?download_id=2220)
Check DMA settings on your drive also.
Does it work with retail DVD's? If so then the drive has a problem with that brand/type of media. Try something else.
Failing that you may have to learn a new language. :)

Thanks for your reply.
Tried WMP instead of PowerDVD, and it plays fine, just doesn't show the subtitles at all.
PC is a new Core duo 6400 with 2gb ram, so doubt thats the problem!
Not sure about retail DVD's as I don't usually hire movies with subtitles. :)
Will have to check the firmware and DMA settings as I haven't done that yet. It does play up with different brand blanks, so it does seem to point to the drive in some way. Will look into it, thanks.
The movie is in French, and that was one of my worst subjects in school :)
Thanks and Ciao. Oh, bugger, thats Italian!

Falconboy,
I suggest checking that the drive may have fallen from DMA to PIO mode. This can be caused by trying to read damaged/scratched dvds. Open the control panel, system, hardware, device manager, ide ata/atapi controllers and click on the ide channels one at a time.

But what is the current transfer mode set to? If there is a problem this will say PIO not UDMA2.

Does Ultra DMA Mode 5 sound right?

Mine says UDMA2. So long as it's not PIO.
