Three dead after Melbourne tunnel crash

Posted at 1:34pm on 23 Mar 2007

Three people are dead after a crash led to an explosion and fire in
Melbourne's busy cross-city Burnley Tunnel on Friday morning.

The collision between four trucks and three cars deep inside the
tunnel forced the evacuation of hundreds of motorists from both the
Burnley and Domain tunnels.

The Metropolitan Fire Brigade has confirmed that three people are
dead.

The 3.4km-long tunnel under the Yarra River bypasses Melbourne's CBD.

And if you're incinerated in a truck crash in the country, it's much less
newsworthy than if you're incinerated inside a city tunnel.

Two incinerated in car-truck crash

March 23, 2007 08:38am

TWO people were incinerated when a car burst into flames in a collision with
a truck in Victoria's northwest today.

Police said the car caught fire on impact and the two occupants had no
chance.

"We don't know - because they have been burnt - whether they are male or
female, or their ages," a spokeswoman said.

"The truck driver is okay and he is still at the scene."

The accident happened about 7am (AEDT) on the Murray Valley Highway between
Boundary Bend and Robinvale.

That said, that story was the leading item on this morning's ABC radio news,
and would likely have been one of the first two or three on the ABC Victoria
TV news tonight, if the City Link crash hadn't have happened.
