Took your advice reg-John and did some research on foot today.
Was able to get price of $4700 for the 46" KDL46X2000 from two places in
Melbourne (JB in Prahran and Hitek in Northcote).
I'm still tossing up which way to go and will start a new thread now that
I've eliminated the KDL52X2000 from the running - best price on this so far
is $8,100 - way, way out of our price range.
New thread is to compare between another Sony that looks pretty good - the
60" LCD (rear projection unit) - best price on this so far is $4,100 (JB and
Hitek) or plasma (possibly Pioneer PDP507XDA - around $4,800 again from JB
and Hitek, down from around $5,300). Also open to suggestions on best
plasmas and whether burn in is no longer an issue these days).
