An ugly brawl that erupted at a concert staged by touring bands The Pixies and Pet Shop Boys has left one lead singer in hospital and a drummer facing charges.

Fans who were thrilled by the coming together of two of the most influential cult acts in modern music were left stunned as a brawl erupted on stage.

Following the vicious melee Pet Shop Boys singer Neil Tennant was rushed to St Vincent’s Hospital in Sydney with broken ribs, wrist and bruising to the face.

Meanwhile, Pixies drummer Dave Lovering has been taken to a local inner-city police station and is being questioned over the incident.

The fight broke out late last night as The Pixies were wrapping up their set, when according to an onlooker, a drunken Tennant walked onstage and questioned the group’s musical pedigree.

Tennant reportedly said that they wouldn’t be fit to appear on Pop Idol, the British version of reality TV show Australian Idol.

Lovering then responded that perhaps Tennant would care to have inserted anatomically a brandished drum stick before launching himself at the white-faced Tennant yelling…
“April Fools’”.

Frankly it had been a slow news morning so NEWS.com.au was quite excited when a report surfaced of a literal battle of bands, which contained most of the above details, before we realised the date was April 1.

So we narrowly avoided April Fooldom.

Perhaps some not-so-careful were taken in by Google’s free wireless broadband service the TiSP, or Toilet Internet Service Provider, that sends the world wide web “up out of your toilet and - splat - right onto your PC”.

It’s debateable whether these efforts rival some of the classic April Fools’ Day jokes , as when the BBC reported weevils in the Italian spaghetti havest.

Or when public radio in the US told an undoubtably bemused public in 1991 that disgraced leader Richard Nixon, of Watergate fame, was making a political comeback and would run again for US president with the slogan “I didn’t do anything wrong, and I won’t do it again.”

Wikipedia has a list of media ones and internet jokes from this year.

We are looking out for any good April Fools’ jokes. Have you played any good pranks today or are willing to admit to being a victim? What are some of your favourite hoaxes from years gone past?

And remember, according to Aussie rules, if you successfully pull an April Fools’ joke after midday you are the fool, so you needn’t be worried in the unlikely event the top of this blog took you in.
