Hi,

Our footy watching family is trying to decide between LCD/LCD rear
projection and Plasma.

We're down to three options at this point:

1. $8,100.00 - Sony KDL52X2000 52" LCD with full HD capability, (HDMI x 2),
built in HD tuner. Progressive resolution - but not sure of refresh rate -
think it's 8MS. This is way out of our budget but we love the crisp,
bright, clean picture and the size is pretty good.

2. $4,100.00 - Sony KDS60R200 60" LCD (rear projection, that according to JB
in Prahran, has just been marked as a discontinued line). Has all the HD
specs as for the 52X above, including Progressive resolution 1920 x 1080,
but with 2.5ms (hoping this is definitely true as am after good pic for fast
playing footy and games, etc).

3. $4,800 - Pioneer Plasma (PDP507XDA) - both places I talked to (JB Prahran
and Hitek in Nortchote) were keen on this model. Was told burn in is no
longer a real issue these days with new technology - and that chemicals used
in system can actually repair burn in. A 36 period with DVD menu left on
was said to disappear after a few hours of normal viewing when staff came
back to shop and realised it had been left on all weekend. Interested in
thoughts on this!!!

4. Foxtel Digital - have read that Foxtel's digital signal is pretty crappy
(we currently have a 32" Sony widescreen WEGA) and it looks fairly decent on
that size. Our concern is that on large screens (we are thinking 50" screen
or more) the Foxtel broadcasts might look really crappy. Sister and her
hubby have an LG plasma and Foxtel Digital and say they are very happy with
theirs (not sure how discerning they are, though....we are pretty fussy when
spending $$$$$ so want to make the very best decision).

If anyone has the above units - in particular the 60" LCD rear projection
system - would love to hear about picture quality.

One problem with the 60" system is that the lamps will burn out (up to 8,000
hours life according to Victorian Authorized Sony service centre in
Moorabbin). We are trying to factor in the cost of replacing lamps say
every 15-18 months or so (shift workers in house so T.V. on lots of hours a
day). Found online seller of these lamps at $508.05 (RRP $600).

Sorry for the rambling post - but wanted to give full details of what we are
after and possible pros and cons.

Cheers and hope to hear from those in the know.

Hi,

Our footy watching family is trying to decide between LCD/LCD rear
projection and Plasma.

1. $8,100.00 - Sony KDL52X2000 52" LCD with full HD capability, (HDMI x 2),

2. $4,100.00 - Sony KDS60R200 60" LCD (rear projection, that according to JB
in Prahran, has just been marked as a discontinued line).

3. $4,800 - Pioneer Plasma (PDP507XDA)

4. Foxtel Digital -

If anyone has the above units - in particular the 60" LCD rear projection
system - would love to hear about picture quality.

A short note about the above screens:

52" Bravia: Good for bright room with lots of potential reflections / Wont look so good for poor quality inputs (Foxtel, Poor SD tv and DVD)/ Very crisp sharp display / colours a little 'bright or cartoon-like' / black levels still relativel poor (problem with LCD technology) / motion artifact IS still an issue for some (so go and view some sport on it to see if it bothers you - It does bother me - shop settings are not the best for this - see over at DTV forum for more ideal settings) / Very expensive:
Best for Bright room / HD input / Computer use / Not sport

50" Pioneer: The pioneers are still anecdotally more sucsceptible to temporary image retention (eg tennis logo on Ch7) than other plasmas, but probably not a big deal unless you play lots of computer games or have young kids (watch use in the first 200 hours though) / Good display for poorer sources, slightly softer image than bravia for HD images (because lower resolution) / more reflection prone than the Bravia/ better blacks. / more natual colour gamut / good for sport /

60" SXRD (Note this is NOT a LCD rear projection - It is a completely different technology - LCOS Liquid Crystal on Silicon - The Bravia LCD rear projections are models KF42 & 50 & 55-E200). Next best display technology to CRTs ie - Fast Motion response (for sport) / Great Blacks / No image retention / good colour resolution / high resolution but not as sharp a picture as the LCD so poor sources look better than equivalent LCD / great price initially for such a big screen / 70" comes with free spare globe.
Downsides: Huge / Heavy / Bulky (compared to flat screen - but not an issue if you werent going to wall mount) / need replacement globes. Think where you put a center speaker if you have a 5.1 surround system. Need stand of some sort (durable)

Best Buy for sports fans:

(1) SXRD60" If bulk not a worry - can afford lots of bulbs for the price differential. Big, image is fantastic. Foxtel will be poxy

(2) Pioneer Plasma - (unless room is sundrenched). Good all round comprimise between poxy foxtel and good monitor for sports

(3) 52" Bravia (if room is sundrenched then it is probably (1)

My opinion only - I am sure others will feel differently

Hi scalpel,

Thank you for your response - much appreciated.

I'm especially happy to hear the 70" sxrd is the best pick for our
situation. We've actually just ordered it and hope to have it up and
running by end of the week.

We are currently looking for a solid entertainment unit to house everything
(5.1 surround sound with the centre speaker as mentioned in your post,
Foxtel stb, PS3, and xbox360.

We would definitely consider the SONY stand that comes with the 70" if it
was not priced at $1,200. Our budget at the high end is around $700.

If anyone knows a place to purchase the SONY stand for the sxrd 70" we'd
love to know where.

Cheers and thanks again, Scalpel, for such a great post.

ozgal :)
