Hi

I was just informed that Pacific Internet is shutting down its News server
on the 16th of this month. I for one, rely on these groups to get (and
share) information, opinions etc. and feel it is a retrograde step to shut
us off. Anyway, if you are a Pacific customer and feel the same way, you can
send that message to feedback@pacific.net.au

If anyone reading this, knows of a way I can keep receiving all the posts in
the newsgroups, I would appreciate being told how. Currently, I access them
via Outlook Express which seems to be the most efficient method by far.

thanks

Steve

You could either change to an ISP with a good usenet server (eg Internode),
or you could use Pipe Network's usenet servers

news.sydney.pipenetworks.com
news.brisbane.pipenetworks.com
news.melbourne.pipenetworks.com
news.adelaide.pipenetworks.com
news.hobart.pipenetworks.com

usually pick the one in your state, but I think they'll all work for
Pacific.

Pipe's servers don't carry binary groups, but they're fine for the text
groups.

You can always simply use Google as your home page and use the Groups
access it provides. That gets me all the groups I want.

http://groups.google.com/ Click on groups, and type in the name of the

I respect your position but truly, to all Pacific customers who rely of this
server to get THIS newsgroup's messages I feel it is very much ON topic.

Cheers

hi abassett

as far as I know, it doesn't allow me to have them basically 'resident' in
outlook express - rather, I have to visit the www each time I want to
see/update the groups.

Indeed. "Google groups" is utterly rubbish.

Oh, BTW - Mozilla Thunderbird or Forte Agent are 100 times better than
Outlook Express for newsgroups, too.

Are you sure about that? I just checked and it does carries hundreds of
binary newsgroups. Just that I've never liked Binary newsgroups as you can
never rely on them to carry all the parts of a set, series or file.

Internode's news server has excellent retention as it mirrors Supernews, up
to 100 days or so I have been told.

Pipe's servers have problem with simple text groups, so don't expect them to
be great with binaries :-)

If you don't want binaries, pay your 10 Euros per year and get an
account with news.individual.net.

On one level I agree with you there, but on the other hand why should a
person be forced to pay for a service that was originaly part of his
isp deal?
Whats next, isp's stop their "free" e-mail service?

Yes. I'm surprised it hasn't happened already. Most 'new' customers
probably already have email in the form of a hotmail, gmail, etc account
and won't even use the ISP mail account.
People also 'churn' very easily these days thus don't want an email
address tied to the ISP.

Running news servers is a resource intensive task, they will disappear
quicker. Most customers think the Internet stops at http:// and P2P file
sharing anyway.

They may carry them, but that doesn't mean they're usefully complete.

Actually very far from usefully complete. Tried a couple of files on pipe
after reading this thread and got around 0.4% of one part out of 25 Rar
files made up of 40 parts per Rar file. The file was released a couple of
days ago so should have been propogated by now.

They can do, yes. ISPs change their services all the time, and not just
the 'free extras'. I haven't known Netspace to do this to current
customers, but new customers may not enjoy all the free extras that old
customers do (different plans and such).

Hmmm, most ISP's don't even *know* that they offer Usenet, the server is
often set up by the original nerds involved in setting up the systems.

I went to n.i.n. because I was sick of the high rate of message loss I
was seeing from my ISP (TPG). Which is not fair to TPG as it was
someone upstream who was dropping every second message, can't recall who
it was now.

My leafnode config collects/ed from:
news.tpg.com.au
news.individual.net
reader.news.telstra.net # Not anymore
news.octanews.com

Cheers,
