What’s a guy supposed to do when he catches the early flight home and finds his girlfriend in a bed with a roomful of strangers? Return to college and start a fraternity! Before you can say “wild and wet wrestling”, Frank “The Tank” (will Ferrell, Saturday Night Live); Mitch (Luke Wilson, Legally Blonde) and Beanie (Vince Vaughn, Swingers) have their own frat raging with out-of-control antics.
But when things get too wild, the dean sets out to shut them down. The laughs are top class (even if the guys aren’t)! in the hit comedy from director Todd Phillips (Road Trip). Taken from the Region 1 DVD version, distributed by Universal.

AUDIO/VISUAL:

Audio:
Old School thankfully was not presented in old school audio. We are treated with a Dolby Digital 5.1 mix here, as well as may dubbings.
Being a comedy there was not much use for the surrounds and the subwoofer, so they were largely reserved for the soundtrack. The subwoofer getting its best use during the performance by Snoop Dog.
Dialogue was clear throughout the film, so every one liner will be audible for the viewer.
Given the type of film Old School is, the audio is as good as one can expect.
Video:
The video quality for Old School is exceptional. I could not find any fault with the video at all. Even in cases where grain can be present, there was nothing. This is the type of presentation we dream about from a new film – as this is what should nearly always be delivered.
This video presentation is definitely of reference quality and should be used to show off the video quality available on DVD.
Old School is presented in a widescreen aspect ratio of 2.35:1 and is 16:9 enhanced. The layer change is well placed at the 63:13 minute mark, during a scene change.

EXTRA FEATURES:

From The Cutting Room Floor – Deleted Scenes:
A terrific collection of scenes removed from the film and longer versions of scenes featured in the film. All of these scenes are brilliant, so I can only assume they were cut for length purposes. An additional bonus deleted scene can also be found on the disc, but I will not disclose its location. The deleted scenes have a total run time of 12:44 minutes and are presented in Dolby Digital 5.1. The video is presented in a 16:9 enhanced, 2.35:1 aspect ratio.
Old School Orientation – Featurette:
Running for 13:04 minutes this featurette is a voice over presented behind the scenes featurette with interviews with the cast and crew. Definitely the best extra feature on this DVD and maintained the comedic humour of the film. The video is presented in an aspect ratio of 1.85:1 and is 16:9 enhanced; with the audio presented in Dolby Digital 2.0 Stereo.
Inside The Actors Studio Spoof:
A 13:41 interview with Vince Vaughn, Will Ferrell, Luke Wilson and Todd Phillips, hosted by James Lipton (who is actually Will Ferrell in character). This mock interview really misses its mark and was very dull. The video is presented in a full frame aspect ratio with the audio in Dolby Digital 2.0
Outtakes and Bloopers:
As it suggests a collection of outtakes and bloopers, which to be honest didn’t look to be any of the above, and more a collection of deleted scenes all cut together. This extra feature runs for 5:05 minutes, with the audio in Dolby Digital 2.0 and the video in a non-anamorphic aspect ratio of 2.35:1.
TV Spots:
Three TV Spots for this film all added together for a combined run time of 1:40 minutes. The audio is in Dolby Digital 2.0 and the video is in a non-anamorphic aspect ratio of 1.85:1
Photo Gallery:
Stills from the production and the film.
Audio Commentary:
The audio commentary stars Luke Wilson, Vince Vaughn, Will Ferrell and the director Todd Phillips. The commentary mainly relives memories of the filming process and on a couple of occasions the commentary members get caught up in watching the film, rather than commenting on it. Nothing much of value is found here to enhance your viewing experience.

MY MEMORABLE MOMENT FROM THIS DVD:

My memorable moment would be the run by Will Ferrell down the street during the party, as well as Andy Dick’s character in his BJ Class. I will say no more – as I do not want to ruin these gags for anyone.

OVERALL:

Old School is an excellent comedy much in the tradition of the comedies of the 1980’s such as Animal House and Revenge of the Nerds, hence the name of this film.
The audio quality is as good as a comedy can get, and the video quality is of reference quality, and combined with some extras makes this a must have purchase for fans of the film, or of the genre.
Old School will be available to purchase on 8th October, 2003 and will have a RRP of $39.95.
