G'day,

RE: LCD TV Recommendations & Queries

So, my 3.5 year old Thomson 66cm widescreen that I paid $698 for died -
most likely has a dead transformer - and I'd rather put my money towards
an LCD TV rather than repair the old one...

That said - I'm a full time student, very little cash flow, thus not
looking really at anything over $900...

FIRST:

Aiko 66cm LCD TV 1366 x 768 pixels -- $748 @ Big W
Any good? Not familiar with the brand...

(Also looked in KMart; wasn't impressed with Sansui or Megavox picture
quality...)

SECOND:

My research tells me that basically everyone has a different resolution
for "HDTV"... some are 1920 x 1080, some are 852 x 576, and some are
inbetween...

Am I right therefore in thinking that it basically comes down to the
quality of the TV in being able to translate that image... for example
with the Aiko TV above; its resolution doesn't match any of the formats
- thus it's going to have to convert the image to fit... and if it
doesn't do a good job, that image is going to look crap... Yes?

Watching some of the TVs today, some of them clearly were not doing a
good job at displaying the image without it looking distorted...

Should I only look at 1920 x 1080 TVs?

LASTLY:

How good/bad will a SD STB image look on these TVs? (cos there wont be
another $400 for a HD STB for a while, so am stuck with my RCA TRC501AU
SD STB til then).

thanks

A 1920x1080 TV will be able to reproduce high-definition DVD without
downsampling but if you have no plans to buy HD or BluRay DVD, a
1376x768 (or similar) res TV will be enough to display free-to-air
high-definition TV.

Resolution isn't everything though. I cheap HD tv may look worse than a
good SD tv.

I bought the Tevion 81cm WS HD Ready LCD from Aldi about 6 months back -
have paired it with a Sony HD Box that I won off Gray Auctions for $160
(and some other stuff)and am very happy with it for the money $960 I
think it was.

They had it back in stock a couple of weeks ago for $860 or so ... my
local store still has one, so you might be lucky.

The only critisism is the blacks - which is to be expected .. other than
that, heaps on inputs, including HDMI and PC/XVGA

I have been told it's a Sharp panel

Cheers
