"Within the next 12 months Mr Bracks has pledged to ban lane changes in the
tunnels, with a loss of three demerit points and a fine of $182."

I can see some knees jerking...

Yet trucks can still hog lanes slowing everyone down on the incline.
Talk about half baked.

And cars can still do 20 kph below the speed limit in the rh lane
slowing everyone down but now no one can overtake them.

Tell me how would this new rule have prevented the accident?
A truck was broken down in the tunnel.
Cars and trucks were changing lanes from behind the stopped truck when
another with the driver apparently not concentrating, plowed into
them.

Well the driver was changing lanes when hit.

This means that now if a truck brakes down in the tunnel you just have to
sit behind it and wait?!? Have out polies even thought this out? How friggin
safe is a huge line of stationary traffic going to be?

AFAIK if you are in a situation where there is someone stopped in front
of you you must stay where you are until directed to move by Citylink
via the PA system or via the car radio override system they have.
I assume they will slow or stop other traffic to allow you to change
lanes safely.
IMO I doubt it will make things any safer.

So how do I get off at Burnley St now? The left lane that enters from
the Westgate becomes the centre lane, I have to change into the left
lane to exit Burnley St, Are they saying Tuff Titties??

Aido.

Looks like doesn't it, I don't think they even considered that scenario.

I bet they did, they probably saw it as another easy revenue raiser!

I know someone who knows someone who knows someone and apparently the
cctv in Citylink is not permitted under legislation to be used for
enforcement purposes. I doubt they would employee someone to watch it
anyway, even it were possible.

That means the lane change ban is almost enforceable unless you are
unlucky enough to have a patrol car in your vicinity.

I predict that like the RH lane occupying rule, it will become obvious
to motorists fairly quickly that it's a paper tiger.

The new "Burnley Exit Toll" could be rather expensive then :-)
