I've just bought a "dunger" for getting around down here, sadly this
does mean that my Subaru thrashing days are over.
Anyway, its a 1992 Nissan dual cab Navara 2WD. Its automatic and has a
3lt V6 petrol powering it.
The price and the fact of a current safety certificate were the
determining features, and the fact that it has 5 months rego and good
tyres (the tyres, stereo and rego would add up to more than I've paid
for it).
It drives pretty well and seems to have a bloody lot of poke for a
commercial vehicle, is this V6 the same one as was fitted to the
skyline? The auto changes smoothly, doesn't flare and I can't hear it
makign any untoward noises.
The one thing I have noticed driving it to Caloundra and back today is
that it drinks fuel like an alcho who has just heard the landlord call
"time'....
Got a few questions.......
Are these things reliable? 15 year old electroncs (engine management
system under driver's seat that seems to be connected to both engine
and gearbox) do not normally inspire confidence.
The previous owner says that the timing belt is around 25,000km
overdue. How complicated is this one? I have only limited tools and no
manual (yet) or is this one I should give to the local mechanic?
No leaks in the engine, but I'd like to know the secret of getting the
oil filter out, somehow it seems to me that taking the gas axe to the
driver's side chassis rail is probably not the approved procedure...
Do these things have auto lash adjustment, or is that another thing
that will need doing?
What oil should I put in it by the way? And how much?
The radiator is pretty new, but it looks like th eprevious owner didn't
bother with an inhibitor in the water - critical or not?
What sort of ATF goes in the slush box? Dexron, FMX or something else?
Is it a 'sealed for life" type or should I be looking to do a complete
dump and change? Filter?
How do you check the gearbox fluid level? hot/cold, running/stopped, in
gear or in neutral?
Lastly, what has anyone heard, good or bad, about these old things?
