View Full Version : Civic Type R - Errr...Hmmmm

Just saw the new Honda Civic Type R in the flesh at the Perth Motor Show.
UGLY UGLY UGLY !!! Its a hemisphere with windows.
It might be a very efficient shape but it reminds me of the 'nice' girl your
mum wants you to bring home. I'd rather the raunchy tart with the long
bonnet, low roof line and big, round, firm tyres. Well, you know what I
mean.
If I want to see ugly, I just look in the mirror. Us ugly blokes need sexy
cars.
Cheers,
Deano.

I don't have that problem.
I've ordered one :)

Good luck with it, but for mine it's need to be an absolutely *brilliant*
car before I'd be prepared to put up with it's "challenged" looks.

You think..? I'm not going to tell you it's the most beautiful car out
there (Alfa Brera if you're asking). But I do think it's well balanced and
quite futuristic. I know it's generally seen as that in the UK where the
Civic hatches are much more prevalent. (I'm not sure why they just brought
the sedan here.)

People will buy it no matter how ugly it may be. Look at the current garden
variety Civic. It's as ugly as a hatful of arseholes but looks to be selling
well if the number I see on the roads are any indicator.
I have no idea how much the Type R Civic is, but it'd want to be a *bloody*
good car for me to put up with the way it looks, and I find it somewhat odd
why Honda wants to delve into the "pocket rocket" market with their "base"
model when it's already catered for by very good cars on either side of
price band.

If the write-up in last month's Wheels is anything to go by, it's not
as good as the other contenders for the same money (Golf GTI, Megane
RS, etc).

You know it might just be a subjective thing, huh? :)

I'm guessing (with a deposit already down) around Golf GTI money at the
most. But it's not about what model it's based on, nor just that it's a
Type R (there have been outstanding and more ordinary ones).
It's taking advantage of that engineering focus on a car that's aimed at
the particular niche of what you want. Very few cars aim at that for me,
and fewer hit it. That's a smaller, more direct, nimble car than you
prefer. It could be a Subaru Liberty for you or an HSV Commodore for
someone else.
And I can drive it the way I want to for year after year, won't have to
pay a fortune or worry about obscene insurance, having my car keyed or
flaky reliability or build quality.
Which is nice :)

Which kinda doesn't surprise me really. The Integra's were never the bees
knees in the performance stakes either for the money they commanded.
Honda has a somewhat unique ability to play on a reputation that's pretty
old these days.

Sure it is.
Some people obviously couldn't give a rats what a car looks like, or they
never would have sold a single one of the last Magna.

Fair enough, but I'm not that into it.
Honda make a nice car, and have done for years. When I was service manager
of a local dealership I got to go to Japan to see the NSX being built, have
a few steers of one around their test track and basically get to know the
thing inside and out in preparation for it's release to our dealership and
to be as informed as one could be in anticipation of customer inquiries.
To be honest, I was bored *shitless* with the whole event after ten minutes,
and found both the car and the event to be the biggest self indulgent wank
I'd seen in ages. I mean, sure it was a great car, sure it was very well
built and sure it was a fun drive (not the most fun I'd had in a car, by a
long shot, but anyway), but the whole thing was just a Honda wankfest that
had little to do with anything other than beating the Honda drum, and I
found that to be remarkably boring in a big hurry.
And that, in a nutshell, is one of the biggest problems I have with Honda.
Not that they don't make a good car, as they do, but they're so far up their
own arses that it's fucking amusing :)

I'll give you a little tip for free right here and now: Honda don't make a
bullet-proof car. They never have, and they never will. Reliable, sure, but
*far* from indestructible. They don't employ any special built techniques or
secret materials that make them more tolerant of abusive treatment than
anything else. Cane the crap out of one on a regular basis, and it will live
a relatively short life.
It's that simple.

Well my experience with mine is largely what I go on. 7+ years.
(But I accept that the Type Rs, like the Evos / STIs / RenaultSports etc
are different to the rest)

Well if you read the Australian magazines... but this is the same culture
that needs the Focus ST to be rebadged the "XR5 Turbo" so the knuckle
draggers can understand :).
Try Car Magazine or Evo or (even!) Top Gear Magazine.

That's a slightly simplistic view of course, I'm not talking about just
speed. The best of the DC5 Integras never came to this country and they
weren't as well rated as the DC2s.

Well the Golf is not raw enough for me, the Renault Clio not well enough
made or finished (the Meganes definitely aren't). Neither is the Focus -
just touch the fabric on the seats.. I'm sure it's quick though.

And Evo placed it stone cold last against its competitor. Enough said.
Uninvolving and off the pace and not cheap.

Interesting how tastes vary. A girl at work thinks the 246 Dino Ferrari is
ugly while the Renault Megane ' barge-arse ' hatch is pretty. Mind you, she
wears sensible shoes and thick glasses.

I haven't seen an Evo review yet, but all of "Car", "Top Gear" and "What
Car?" put it top.

The Golf GTi would be the best pick of the lot really.
