I have a Sony DVP-NS530 DVD Player which, for an entry-level model, produces very good sound and picture quality. My only complaint is that it doesn't tolerate discs that are even slightly dirty or scratched. I have authored a number of DVD-Rs over the last couple of years, and they play fine initially. Trouble is after a few months (stored in a CD wallet) this player refuses to play them. These are discs that have only been played once or twice, and there are no visible marks on the discs whatsoever. When I attempt to copy the VOB/IFO files to PC (to burn them again), I sometimes get a CRC error (but not always  ).
I guess my questions are:
Can blank DVD media (like Ritek, for example), adequately stored, deteriorate in such a short time?
And is it possible for a CRC error on digital data to 'materialise' from nowhere?

Hi Bulldog,
In my experience, discs need to be stored so that the 'data' side (the shiny side where the data is burned) is not in contact with anything. Am I right to interpret your post as meaning that your discs are stored in flexible plastic wallets? This could be your problem.

Yes, flexible plastic wallets that are supposed to be scratch resistant. And I can play them on a cheaper DVD player, but not the Sony. This is why I'm puzzled. The DVD-Rs were authored and burned correctly, and they look perfect to the naked eye. Yet if I throw in a rental DVD that looks like its been handled by Captain Hook, it may freeze or jump but it will at least start playing.

In my experience the disc should be stored so that it doesn't touch anything as any change to the surface of the data side may stop the read. Having said that, it is not unheard of for a 'cheapy' player to be less critical of the discs we throw at it as compared to a 'name' player.

Thanks for replying leggy. With dozens of DVD-Rs a CD wallet seems like the only practical and affordable way to store them. I guess I'll have to buy a cheapo 2nd player

Good excuse to start 'experimenting' again:p
Good Luck
