I am using a HP-CD DVD writer 300e and external drive with Windows 98SE. The DVD writer came bundled with software called Arcsoft ShowBiz. I was having problems last night so I went to some links for some FREE trial versions. I downloaded ULead Movie Factory and Pinnacle Studio 7.0. The Pinnacle Studio would NOT worked it kept telling me I needed Direct X 8.0 and I have Direct X 9.0 but guess it didn't like that so I used the Ulead Movie Factory instead.
My problem is, I have created two test DVD's 10 mins in length using both programs. In the Arcsoft program when I view the DVD it flashes with a black screen (Full) through out the whole 10 mins. and with the ULead Movie Factory it flashes with black and green lines. Can anyone tell me what could be causing this and what I can do to correct it? I am a total NEWBIE..this is my FIRST attempt at this. I did try to do this at all different sizes like 340x480 and speeds as low as 4000 but the results all the same. Vertical black and green lines flashing.
Thanks for any help you can offer me.

Firstly, are you trying to burn home videos onto DVD or simply 'backing up' existing DVD's?
If the latter, I recommend using DVD Decryptor, DVDShrink and RecordNow Max to burn as they're much more user friendly and useable for newbies.

Thanks for your input but that is NOT the issue. I have direct X on my machine and have no problems running the software or the DVD drive. My question is why I have vertical black and green lines on my DVD after burning!

Think I need to clarify my problem somewhat. It really is NOT after burning the DVD, I can view the video as it is capturing but when I play it back it has vertical lines wide green and black and very little of the picture can be seen. I did think maybe something was wrong with my VCR so I tried capturing with my camcorder and the same thing happened. Then I tried capturing something from the TV and again the same thing. I just can 't get a clear picture. It looks like the old TV when you had a vertical control to stop it from rolling but it more like flashing. I never even get to burn it because it doesn't view correctly. This must be something strange because I have posted on several forums looking for help and have many views and no answers yet.
Thanks again

Could be you are recording and playing back in the wrong formats.Say if your source video is NTSC try to record in NTSC and make sure your TV/Monitor is set to Auto or NTSC.
